Suspect in game warden shooting confesses, affidavit says

Sgt. Scott Bullitt remains in serious condition in a Shreveport hospital, LDWF says

The 29-year-old Monroe man accused of shooting a Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agent Thursday night during a traffic stop near the Wham Break boat launch confessed to State Police after he was apprehended, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in Ouachita Parish.

Luke Jarrod Hust admitted shooting Sgt. Scott Bullitt in the back about 6:45 p.m. Thursday on the Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area, according to a news release.

Hust, who has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder in the case, was apprehended at his residence Thursday night about 11 p.m., the affidavit states.

“After being advised of his rights, (Hust) confessed to LSP, stating he shot agent (Bullitt) and shot at (a second agent) because he was a convicted felon and did not want to be caught in possession of a firearm,” the affidavit posted on the Ouachita Correctional Center’s website states.

The affidavit also sheds light on what apparently happened during the traffic stop conducted by Bullitt and another unnamed LDWF agent.

The agents “attempted to conduct a pat-down search of Luke (Hust.) (Hust) resisted the search, pulled a gun and shot Agent (Bullitt) and shot several times at (a second agent). (Hust) fled the scene on foot,” the affidavit states.

LDWF spokesman Adam Einck said Bullitt, 32, of Jonesboro, remains in serious condition and was airlifted Friday afternoon to the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.

Bullitt has been an LDWF agent for more than five years and is married with no kids, according to a news release.

He received the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission DWI Award on March 24. He was selected to receive the award due to his work to make Louisiana waterways and roadways safer by removing impaired drivers, according to LDWF.

Hust was being held without bond Friday afternoon at the Ouachita Correctional Center, according to their website.
