The September issue of Louisiana Sportsman has hit newsstands across the state, and is packed with information to help you be more successful during the upcoming hunting season. It is also available for digital download in the online Sportsman Outdoor Store.
This issue contains coverage of potential problems with coastal fisheries at the mouth of the Mississippi River, which some believe is connected to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The series of stories quotes LSU’s Dr. Jim Cowan, who said upwards of 50 percent of fish sampled from reefs impacted by the oil spill suffer from lesions compared to the normal rate of about 5 percent.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” Cowan said. “And it really started after the oil spill.”
Cowan said the same afflictions have been seen on at least 25 species of fish, including red snapper, amberjack, blackfin tuna, redfish, speckled trout and mangrove snapper.
“It’s some nasty stuff,” Cowan said.
