State’s budget crunch means eligible purchases subject to 3 percent tax
Louisiana’s Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday is set for this weekend, but for the second consecutive year, the state’s ongoing budget crisis has reduced the savings hunters and outdoorsmen will experience on firearms, ammo and other eligible hunting supplies.
During last year’s first legislative session, the state sales tax exemption was set at just 2 percent, meaning eligible purchases are still subject to 3 percent state sales tax instead of the full 5 percent. Next year, unless the Legislature changes things, all eligible purchases will be fully exempt from the state sales tax in 2018 and beyond.
The good news for this year is all eligible purchases still remain fully exempt from all local sales taxes.
But many outlets are providing additional discounts to sweeten the pot, and some are offering to cover all of the state tax on eligible purchases.
According to the Louisiana Department of Revenue’s Web site, hunting products eligible for the sales tax exemption include ATVs, apparel, archery items, firearms, scopes, tree stands, hunting knives and more.

The Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday was created by the Louisiana Legislature in 2009, and always occurs on the first consecutive Friday through Sunday in September.
