Spring inshore shrimp season to close in Vermilion/Teche river basin

Increased counts of juvenile white shrimp prompt July 3 closing

The spring inshore shrimp season from the Atchafalaya River Ship Channel at Eugene Island westward to the western shore of Freshwater Bayou Canal will close one-half hour after sunset on July 3, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

LDWF biologists have noted increased quantity, distribution and percentages of juvenile white shrimp in these waters, and the decision to close the area was made to protect these developing shrimp so they can grow to more marketable sizes, LDWF said.

All remaining state inside waters, as well as all state outside waters seaward of the Inside/Outside shrimp line will remain open to shrimp harvesting until further notice, according to LDWF.
