Pearl River cleanup work starting soon

The U.S. Coast Guard has informed St. Tammany Parish Government that they will begin picking up debris from the Pearl River Navigational Canal between Locks One and Two within the next several weeks. The majority of the debris is expected to be vegetative and remaining from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This section of the canal is north of the Town of Pearl River and south of the Town of Sun.

Debris will be placed on a barge and taken to Lock 1, where it will either be burned or transported as appropriate.

Parish government wants citizens using the waterway for recreational or other uses to be aware of the clean up and be especially mindful of boater safety in the working area. The boat launch will remain open. The work is expected to take between two and three weeks.
