Recreational anglers, charter captains urged to attend Monday’s Gulf Council meeting in Baton Rouge

LDWF encourages both groups to attend on Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. to discuss red snapper quota allocations and Reef Fish Amendment 40

Although sector separation would essentially split the recreational quota between private anglers and charter captains, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is encouraging both groups to attend the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council meeting Monday evening in Baton Rouge.

The 6 p.m. meeting, which will be located at the Hyatt Place at 6080 Bluebonnet Boulevard, is being held to collect input on Reef Fish Amendment 40 regarding sector separation.

Current management measures are applied to the recreational sector as a whole without distinguishing between private anglers and for-hire captains, but sector separation, if adopted, would change that.

The meeting represents the best chance for Louisiana anglers to make suggestions or raise concerns before the council starts working to develop a final amendment at its meeting later this month in Biloxi, Miss.
