$15 million complex is officially open for business
Almost nine years after being destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, the newly rebuilt Port Eads Marina Facility near the mouth of the Mississippi River at South Pass hosted a grand opening celebration over the Memorial Day weekend.
“Port Eads is close to arguably some of the best offshore, coastal and inshore fishing grounds in the continental United States, and well situated near some of the best duck and goose hunting in Louisiana,” said Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser. “This new facility offers safe harbor to vessels fishing the rigs and will be a hub for recreational offshore activity.”
The facility features a marina with 60 boat slips, an ice house, fuel dock, restaurant and two bunk houses.
“This has been a tremendous effort, first on behalf of Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser to get the federal help necessary to rebuild Port Eads, and secondly the visionary decision that the Plaquemines Parish Council made to authorize oversight of this facility to a nonprofit group as a unique public-private cooperative endeavor,” said Jacques Kutcha, director of the Port Eads Fishing Refuge, a non-profit corporation formed to work with Plaquemines Parish in a cooperative endeavor. “With High Adventure Company onboard as the day to day manager and outfitter, this project will be globally noted on many fronts.
“And the best part is that the fruits of this partnership will ultimately help educate the children in Plaquemines Parish.”
