No oil, plenty trout at Grand Isle, mayor says

Thinking of heading to Grand Isle for some R&R this weekend? Mayor David Camardelle has a message for you.

“Come on down,” he said Thursday morning.

Camardelle said the trout have turned on like someone’s flipped a switch, and there’s not even a hint of oil near the island.

“There were boats all over yesterday, and they all caught trout,” he said. “I own a pier on the chenier, and this morning, my carpenters were all catching trout off the dock.

“Conditions couldn’t be better here.”

Camardelle said workers stand ready to deploy boom should it become necessary, but he’s not going to do it a minute too soon.

“You can’t have that boom soaking in salt water for days,” he said. “It just doesn’t work that way. When the helicopters tell us that the oil is on us, then we’ll put out the boom.”

Camardelle’s overall plan, should it become necessary to implement, involves setting the boom across the four passes east of Grand Isle to protect the sensitive inland marshes.

Camardelle said he’d alert LouisianaSportsman.com if any oil ultimately threatens Grand Isle or the surrounding area.
