Memorial Day weekend marked kick-off of STAR

CCA Louisiana members vie for more than $500,000 in prizes

The CCA Louisiana Statewide Tournament and Angler’s Rodeo (STAR) began its 17th year on Saturday (May 28), and the tournament lasts through Sept. 5. The STAR is one of the largest and richest saltwater fishing tournaments in the country, offering more than $500,000 in prizes and spanning the entire Louisiana Gulf Coast.

The event is open to anglers of every age.

All kids 17 and under participate for free courtesy of Cabela’s. All they need is a current CCA membership, and then they can register for the tournament for free.

For the fifth straight year, the first 10 tagged redfish turned in will win some incredible prizes, including a brand new Chevy Silverado pickup truck worth approximately $30,000.

“We gave away a truck last year to one lucky angler,” STAR Director Rad Trascher said. “All it takes is one cast that could change your life.

“And this year, it is so easy to enter STAR before going on the water,” Trascher said.

You can signing up for STAR by calling 877.4CCASTAR (877.422.2782) anytime from anywhere.

The Speckled Trout Division offers STAR anglers four chances to win in four zones: east, southeast, southwest and west.

The heaviest trout weighed by a STAR angler at a registered weigh station in each of the four zones will win a 190RG Nautic Star bay boat powered by a 90-horsepower Mercury outboard.

The heaviest trout caught statewide will win a 2110 Sport Nautic Star powered by a 150-horsepower Mercury outboard.

This year’s STAR also includes the return of the Ladies’ Only division. The female angler logging the summer’s heaviest trout will win a five-day Carribean Cruise for two out of New Orleans for the summer’s heaviest trout.

Other returning divisions are mangrove snapper, lemonfish, dorado, king mackerel, fly fishing, kayak and largemouth bass.

Boat packages will also be awarded in largest-fish divisions for speckled trout, flounder and kayak divisions. Tackle packages are offered in the mangrove snapper, dorado, lemonfish and king mackerel divisions.

The Fly Division boasts a $1,500 gift card to Cabela’s.

Winners in the lemonfish division will each receive $2,500 offshore tackle packages, while the largest flounder weighed will win the angler a 16-foot Weldbilt boat with a 40-horse Mercury.

Tackle packages worth $2,500 will be awarded to the anglers weighing in the heaviest mangrove snapper, dorado and lemonfish, king mackerel.

Winners in the largemouth bass division will win $1,500 Cabela’s gift cards.

The Youth Division will have opportunities to win in four divisions: east, southeast, southwest and west. One of four 14-foot Weldbilt boats with 15-horsepower Mercury engines will be given to a lucky New Tide angler who weighs in a speckled trout measuring at least 14 inches. Winners will be randomly drawn at the end of the tournament.  New Tide anglers also are eligible to fish in all other STAR divisions.

The Calcasieu Calcutta returns for the second year in a row. Participants fishing on Calcasieu Lake may catch, weigh and release live speckled trout at either Cocahoe’s Marina or Calcasieu Point Landing to be entered into the Calcutta. Winners will be determined by largest trout registered and released alive.
