Waterways leading to Point-aux-Chenes closed, Terrebonne Parish officials announce

Terrebonne Parish canals and bayous leading from 4 Point Landing to Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area were closed to all boat traffic early this morning (June 29) because of concerns surrounding oil from the BP Deepwater Horizon spill, Terrebonne Parish officials announced.

No specifics were provided as to the canals and bayous included in the closure, which went into effect at 5:30 a.m. and will remain in effect until further notice. However, Coast Guard Lt. Jim McMenemy told LouisianaSportsman.com that the specific closures could change as the situation changes.

“A canal might be closed now and opened later, or open now and closed later,” McMenemy said.

Current information will be available on Channel 16, but McMenemy said anglers should watch for boom.

“If you see a boom, it’s recommended not to go in (the waterway),” he said.
