Trout Rule

Anglers don’t have a very long season to catch keeper trout close to the landing at Cypremort Point, but when it’s on, there’s no place better.

As a professional guide, Steve Smith will happily take clients redfishing, but his passion is clearly for speckled trout.

“When I’m after trout, a redfish is a nuisance fish,” he said. “They are right next to a gafftop [catfish].

“I like trout; it’s the art of deception.”

“Isn’t that true for redfish as well,” I counter?

“Oh no; redfish are stupid,” is his quick reply. “They [speckled trout] are much more sophisticated than redfish. Every day is a challenge. They are elusive.

“Some days all the preparation in the world, with all the stars and moon aligning, you can’t catch a box of fish. It makes you come back the next day.

“Redfish are more predictable. You can go to just about any bank with an eddy or moving water and find redfish. Trout aren’t like that.

“My bucket list goal is a double-digit fish.”
