Top baits for Delacroix specks

Like any speckled-trout angler, Capt. John Gremillion enjoys catching big fish, but he likes catching limits even more, so he throws a TKO Shrimp double-rig — even under a rattling cork.

“I just like this bait,” he said. “It looks just like a shrimp. I catch a lot of fish on it, and I get doubles all the time.”

Gremillion’s fishing partner, Scott Walker, is partial to swim-tail baits, and really likes one in particular.

“My favorite is a shrimp creole Matrix Shad,” he said. “The tail is just amazing. It runs real well in the water. You can just swim it. It’s got so much action on the bait. It drives these trout crazy.”

Walker will fish the lure under a cork, but his favorite way to fish it is to work it tight-lined in deep holes.

His retrieve is unusual. He shakes his rod violently before letting the bait settle and taking up the slack.

It seems to work well for him.
