Inshore shrimp season opens for much of the coast on May 8

Southeast and southwest Louisiana inshore waters set to open May 15, LDWF says

State inside waters from the eastern shore of South Pass of the Mississippi River to Freshwater Bayou will open for the spring shrimp season beginning at 6 a.m. on Monday, May 8, according to the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Department.

During Thursday’s Wildlife and Fisheries Commission meeting, the commission also announced that inside waters from the Louisiana/Mississippi line to the eastern shore of South Pass — as well as from Freshwater Bayou to the Louisiana/Texas state line — will open at 6 a.m. on Monday, May 15.

Over the last five weeks, biologists conducted more than 500 trawl samples in nearshore waters to determine opening dates.

The season opening is based on when a minimum of 50 percent of the sampled inshore brown shrimp population reaches 100-count per pound or larger, according to a press release.
