Fish showing up early at Grand Isle

Normally, anglers have to wait until the month of May for consistent action around Grand Isle, but this is definitely not a normal year.

The speckled-trout action has already begun on the beaches, according to Buggy Vegas, owner of Bridge Side Marina on the west side of Grand Isle.

“We’re all excited down here,” he said. “The trout are on all the beaches.”

Top spots have been Grand Isle itself as well as Elmer’s Island.

“Everybody’s coming back with 15 to 20 nice (trout) that they’re catching on the beaches,” Vegas said.

The trout have moved in early because the bait also moved in early. Vegas said he was selling live shrimp in March for the first time ever. He still has live shrimp, croakers and cocahoes.

“We had a lot of wind, and that kept people at the dock, but right now, it’s beautiful,” he said on Tuesday (April 10).

Anglers yesterday caught plenty of white trout and even some specks off the Caminada Bridge. The Caminada rocks also are holding a good number of specks, Vegas said.
