Empire, Buras waters close after oil from BP spill found

‘We feel they are safe,’ official says

Waters along the west side of the Mississippi River south of Empire close to fishing today at sunset after oil from the BP spill was confirmed in the area, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced.

Closed are inshore waters from the southern shoreline of Red Pass at 89 degrees 28 minutes 13.4 seconds north latitude westward to the western shoreline of the Empire Canal.

Inshore waters in the Empire/Buras area along the east side of the Mississippi River remain open to fishing.
