Bait and tackle

What tackle to use on the bridge is a matter of personal choice. Most people use medium-action spinning or baitcasting rigs, but fly rods and long crappie jigging poles are also popular.

Live shrimp is a favorite bait — and the larger the shrimp, the larger the fish tend to be.

Almost as popular are sparkle beetles, Bass Assassins and a variety of other soft plastics.

Which color the trout prefer may change from night to night, so it sometimes requires a little experimentation.

Plastic baits are usually fished on tandem rigs near the water’s surface, but cracked crab fished on the bottom with a Carolina rig can also be productive for bull reds.
