Why ‘Waldo?’

There is a story behind every crappie.com angler’s online name. Here’s Mark Weldon’s.

When he was a junior in high school, his church had a new youth minister who didn’t know everybody’s name. One night they were talking, and the minister glanced down at Mark’s Bible.

Mark’s name was on the Bible, but the minister could only see the last name, and the golden “n” was rubbed off of Weldon.

“Oh, hello, Waldo,” the minister said.

The nickname stuck.

And in 2006 when Weldon first signed up on Crappie.com, he was leery about using his real name for security reasons, so the natural screen name was “Waldo.”

The “Doc” part just got kind of added on there.

And, yes, over the years his nickname and the “Where’s Waldo” fad often got tied in together.

Where’s Waldo? Gone Fishin’.
