Video: Hackney lands 9-pound bass lodged on 12-inch sac-a-lait

Amazing catch included in Sportsman TV episode with ‘Mr. Crappie,’ Wally Marshall

When the cameras are rolling, you just never know what you might see on Sportsman TV.

Like in this recent episode, when host Greg Hackney and producer Jared Serigné traveled to Lake Sam Rayburn in East Texas to target crappie over brush piles with Mr. Crappie himself, Wally Marshall.

The episode is full of great crappie fishing information, including Marshall’s go-to jig knot, what line he uses and how he works brush piles over to maximize his catch.

A close-up of the 9-pound bass that devoured Greg Hackney’s crappie on Lake Sam Rayburn during a recent episode of Sportsman TV.

But Serigné captured a special moment when Hackney landed a 9-pound lunker largemouth that devoured a 12-inch crappie that had gotten caught up in branches of a brush pile.

“Het got the crappie as I was reeling it back in, like a grouper on an oil rig,” Hackney said. “That fish was struggling, and that’s what caused that bass to bite. Then all of a sudden, he comes off the limb and I couldn’t turn him. I said, ‘Well, maybe it’s a big old catfish.

“Then he got hung up again and I fought it and fought it, and he got hung again. I told Jared I’d never catch it, that it would break off.”

But the reigning Bassmaster Elite Series Angler of the Year pulled it off, and Marshall netted the ‘two-for-one special.’

“It was too funny. It was like, ‘He can’t stay away from the bass,’” Serigné said. “It was definitely one of the coolest moments of my career.”
