Tackle talk for spider-rigging crappie

Williams said his standard spider-rigging outfit comprises a 14-foot medium-action Wally Marshall rod with a Wally Marshall spinning reel strung with 8-pound monofilament terminating in a snap swivel for quickly attaching and switching out rigs.

With Hi-Tech rod holders base-mounted on his deck, the dovetail fasteners enable him to easily remove the holder mounts between uses.

On the water, Williams said rod spacing is critical to efficient operation.

“We position our outside poles slightly forward of straight out from the boat,” he said. “We space them evenly apart from there all the way to the center (of the boat).

“A lot of it has to do with where you’re fishing and how active the fish are. In shallower water, the fish will hit and they can’t run down, so they’ll run to the side. That’s when you want to space them farther apart to prevent the fish from running under other poles.
