Woodworth angler gets ‘two-for-one special’ on Oden Lake

Savant catches two bass simultaneously on Strike King’s KVD sexy ghost minnow jerkbait

When Shawn Savant set the hook on his jerkbait Saturday afternoon on Oden Lake in Woodworth, he thought he was about to land a nice 5- to 6-pound bass as the very first fish on his brand new rod.

He was with his wife, Shelby, breaking in a new All Star jerkbait rod and Lew’s reel he had purchased earlier that same day, and he saw the bass demolish his Strike King KVD sexy ghost minnow on the private lake in Rapides Parish.

“I could see the fish feeding on shad, so I threw right in the middle of them,” said Savant, 28, who lives in the subdivision surrounding the lake. “I jerked it a couple of times and they smashed on to it — they hit it hard.”

Well, he ended up with 5 or 6 pounds of bass, alright — just not exactly the way he expected.

“I thought I had a big one,” Savant said. “But once I got them to the boat, I pulled them up and said, ‘Damn baby, I got two fish!’”

He didn’t realize he had two bass initially because he had forgotten to set the drag on the new reel.

“I didn’t even think about setting the drag,” he said. “So when I started reeling, nothing was coming in.”

Both bass were hooked solidly in the mouth with a treble hook from each end of the lure, and the smaller bass also was hooked near an eye with the middle treble.

“They were both hooked good,” Savant said. “They both ate the bait.”

Savant didn’t have a scale onboard his 14-foot Tracker, but released both fish to catch another day.

“I threw those two back. I hardly ever keep the fish,” he said. “I just like going fishing.”

The hot streak for the new jerkbait rod continued Sunday, when Savant returned to the lake and caught five more bass — one at a time.

In only two successful trips, including his very first catch of two bass simultaneously, the rod has developed somewhat of a reputation.

“Well, it’s got a lot to live up to now,” Savant said with a laugh.
