Port Barre man dies at Toledo Bend

Authorities called after unmanned boat spotted in Pirate’s Cove area, LDWF says

A 71-year-old Port Barre man died Monday afternoon after apparently falling out of his boat in the Pirate’s Cove area of Toledo Bend, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The body of Phillip D. LeBlanc was recovered around 6 p.m. after agents were called to the area at 4:30 after being notified of an unmanned boat, according to a press release.

A witness had observed LeBlanc fishing from the front deck of his boat, and moments later saw that boat unoccupied, the release states. The witness went to the 21-foot vessel to offer assistance, and found the trolling motor on without anyone onboard and contacted authorities.

LeBlanc was recovered without a life jacket, according to the release.
