One of the things that BASS Elite Series professional angler Clark Reehm kept pointing out over and over as he discussed bass fishing around Delacroix was fishing what he called high-percentage places.
“To me, a high-percentage place is an area where you can pick off one bass and reasonably expect to come back to the same spot a couple hours later and pick off another one,” he said. “These high percentages are the best ambush spots in an area that the biggest bass are going to dominate.
“As soon as the big boy on the block is gone, the next biggest boy moves in to take his place.”
Reehm pointed some high-percentage places around Delacroix would be anything that creates a break in the current. Old duck blinds, laydowns, rocks — anything that blocks the current and creates a pocket of slack water is a high-percentage place.
“Maybe you’ve got some blowouts or holes in a line of rocks,” Reehm said. “Maybe you’ve got an entire canal with one little jut-out in the back corner.
“With limited time on the water, whether you’re tournament fishing or just fun fishing, you don’t want to waste your time fishing everything you see.”
By hitting these high-percentage areas only, Reehm says anglers can dramatically up their chances of quickly catching a good bag of bass. A pro’s focus is almost entirely on eliminating randomness and being as efficient as he can be when he gets to his fishing spot.
Fishing the spots that are most likely to hold bass, and only those spots, means you’ll be putting your bait in front of more fish during the course of a trip rather than just hoping one happens to be swimming by where you’re fishing.
