Hackney falls 8 ounces short, places third at Dardanelle

Crochet finishes in seventh place

Greg Hackney’s 15-pound, 3-ounce sack on Sunday wasn’t quite enough for victory at the Bassmaster Elite Series stop at Lake Dardanelle.

Jason Christie won the event by 4 ounces over Gerald Swindle, with Hackney finishing in third place.

“I could go back and look at lost fish,” said Hackney, who had a slim lead going into Sunday. “I lost a 3-pounder one day, but that happens to everybody. But otherwise I fished clean this week.”

The Gonzales angler caught a 4-pounder with only five minutes left in the competition, but said he didn’t get the big fish he needed on Sunday.

“… I still felt like I was coming back short one big one,” he said.

Christie brought in 19 pounds, 2 ounces on Sunday to finish with 72 pounds, 3 ounces. Swindle finished with 71 pounds, 15 ounces and Hackney rounded out the Top 3 with 71 pounds, 11 ounces.

With his third place finish, Hackney jumped from seventh place to second place in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race, trailing Mark Davis by a single point.

Cliff “Cajun Baby” Crochet finished in seventh place with 66 pounds, 14 ounces after turning in a 14-pound, 9-ounce sack on Sunday.
