Fishing lure colors are a hotly contested conundrum. One angler swears by black-and-blue, while another won’t throw anything but watermelon red.
The simple fact of the matter is that just about any color created in the depths of lure designer’s imaginations will catch bass.
However, anglers settle on a particular color or two because they happened to be the colors he had tied on one day when he or she whack-stacked the bass.
That’s why Sid Havard said he’s only going to have red shad- or white crawfish- colored Rat-L-Traps tied on when he has to catch them during a bass tournament.
“That’s the only two colors for me,” he insisted. “I’m not saying other colors won’t work, but when I’ve got to catch them those are the two I go with.”
Havard acknowledged he has had successful trips with chrome/blue and gold/black at Caddo on cloudy days. In fact, he feels like they might offer a little bit more attraction with their added flash on those kinds of days.
“But it’s still hard to lay that red one down, even then,” he admitted. “The main thing is to fish whatever color you have confidence in; those are the ones you’re going to catch your fish on because you’re going to fish them better.”
