Topwater time again

The full summer heat is still on but the species found close to the launches is changing. Many more speckled trout are showing up there, especially the schools of 11″ – 13″ trout. The white shrimp are also very plentiful in the marshes this year, so we can expect the trout and redfish to have lots of food this fall, which should give us some fat trout by the end of 2023.

In this video, we stumbled upon one of our epic Louisiana nature scenes, 1,000s of speckled trout busting shrimp in a bayou. This is not uncommon in September and October because the white shrimp are moving out and the trout are moving in. There are certain bayous that consistently create this scene because they are positioned as highways for shrimp and trout.

In my experience, September and October are surprisingly good months for topwater baits, and I have begun fishing with them again. A topwater bait is deadly for speckled trout and redfish will hit them also. A bull redfish attacking a topwater bait is an awesome sight to see because they have to get on top of the lure to get their mouth on the bait. Consequently, the effect is not unlike a submarine surfacing.
