Max DeRoche has to scare off hog to recover doe

On the evening of Jan. 15, Max DeRoche of Duson, La., was hunting on family land in Washington, La., with his dad, Craig. At about 5:45, Max made a great shot on one of the 13 deer he had been watching from his stand. The doe ran back into the woods, so after shoot time, his dad went meet him to track it. They walked into the woods and saw the doe laying on the ground about 30 yards from them, but she was “moving.” Max left his dad to watch the deer while he went get his rifle. While he was gone, Craig heard what sounded like the deer getting up and walking in the palmettos. He turned to shine his flashlight on her and was shocked to see something yanking on her. Max returned in time to hear his dad say, “something is taking your deer!” Craig flashed his light back at the doe just as it disappeared into the palmettos. They couldn’t see what was pulling it, so they slowly crept up to the doe. A HOG!! About a 150-pound hog was yanking on the back side of the doe trying to drag it off! Max tried to take a shot at it, but the pig ran off before he could do so safely. Trying not to agitate it, they grabbed the doe and got out of there! Craig usually has a handgun on him but had left it at home that night. He says it’s the first, and last time, he goes looking for a deer without it!
