Greg Leger and abiding crew set off from Cypremort Point the morning of Aug. 6 to test their sea legs in the annual St. Thomas More Fishing Rodeo. Conditions were much rougher compared to the glassy seas from the weekend before, but the first rig we arrived to produced snapper immediately. We decided to not catch our limit in 15 minutes and move to another platform. Success was immediately suppressed and we doubted our move. Greg decided to cool down and kill time by doning the spear and some fins, despite stronger currents and low visibility. Within moments after blowing a few bubbles, Greg returned to the boat yelling “Ling! Ling!” Those aboard helped haul the fish onto the boat with new optimism and wonderment. Over the next several minutes of no snapper catching, we hear Greg yell, “Ling! Another ling!” Despite being bigger and harder to land, we secured the fish and made it back to the weigh in with time to spare. Greg ended up taking 2nd and 3rd place for Cobia in the spearfish division and got enough STM swag to last until the next rodeo.
