Robby Scott caught this 7-foot (84.3-inch) alligator gar while using cut bait.
“I actually tag these fish and take fin samples for research, as I was reached out to by a gar research team. I have caught four of my own gar after a year since being initially tagged. None grew at all within the 1+ year. The sizes of these fish from initial tag as well as recapture were 5’3”, 6’7”, 5’3”, and 6’10”. The fish pictured here is estimated to be 40+ years of age. My goal is show the long lifespan and vulnerable spawning patterns of these fish though my YouTube channel to help us better understand the species since they are a native species and we are the only state without protections on them.”
