Alligator snapping turtles are known for their massive size and powerful jaws. They are typically found in slow-moving rivers, bayous and swamps throughout the state. Hunters often use baited hooks or box traps submerged in murky waters, baited with fish or meat to attract the turtles. Due to their threatened status in some areas, Louisiana enforces specific rules on when and how they can be harvested, including seasonal restrictions and size limits.
