The Leanest Month

No Hollywood premier generated such anticipation. The capacity crowd waiting for the Rolling Stones to finally strut onto the Superdome stage in 1989 seemed pathetically blase’ compared to this crowd.[…]

Belated Bucks

In the northwest corner of Louisiana, Red River bass fishing guide Russ McVey sits in a box stand overlooking a pipeline with his daughter Madison about to run out of iPod battery. They hope a buck trying to recover from the rut wants to grab a few kernels of corn.[…]

Finish Strong

Imagine if every time you went to your refrigerator or pantry someone was there to smack you over the head just as you reached in for something to eat. You’re starving, craving your favorite snack, then out of nowhere, BLAM! Suddenly something prevents you from filling your stomach and satisfying your hunger, or more importantly, something stands in the way of you surviving.[…]

Concealment key to late-season hunts

One of the tallest hurdles about hunting late season deer is that they are on the back end of a season during which they have just about seen, heard and smelled it all. Deer are wary enough, but deer that have learned how to avoid being shot take the cake.[…]

A new year

The old Carol Burnett Show used to end with the phrase “Seems we just got started and before you know, it’s time to go.” For me it seems the deer season just opened, and now this is the last month of the season.[…]

Heartbreak on the Delta

I found a new stand location at the Atchafalaya Delta WMA, with little hunter pressure and tons of deer and hog sign in the area. My first hunt resulted in the hog kill mentioned in my last article.

I was looking forward to finally getting a morning hunt, since the fog was finally not going to be an issue. I set up well before daylight, and could hear a deer walking slowly around feeding about 40 or 50 yards directly in front of my location. This was about 20 minutes before good light.[…]

Sighting of small buck turns into St. Landry Parish monster deer

Steve “Moonie” Chelette was excited when he headed to the woods on Friday (Dec. 16). The weather had turned nasty, with temperatures dropping and a drizzling rain setting in, and he had seen a small buck the day before and was making a move to try and cut it off.

“I had a ladder stand on the other side of property where I thought he was, and I went there looking for him,” Chelette said.

What showed up that afternoon turned out to be a monster 18-pointer that has been green scored at 166 2/8 inches Boone & Crockett.[…]

The trick to scent-free boots

I find most hunters take good care of their clothes with scent-prevention tactics, but they give little notice to their boots. Just because they are rubber doesn’t mean your aren’t putting scent down. While you might not be leaving your scent on the earth where you step, any odor will be released in the air along the path traveled.

It’s the item you wear the most but wash the least, so I’m going to share my tricks to eliminating odor in boots.[…]
