Salvador Wildlife Management Area, located along the northwestern shore of Lake Salvador in St. Charles Parish, is the place to be to catch sac-a-lait according to local anglers.
Joey Hebert, of Westwego, caught 54 sac-a-lait in two days, fishing along Cypress Canal and Gulf Canal.
“It just comes to being in the right place at the right time,” Hebert said.
On Feb. 3, Hebert and his friend, Larry Marcantel grabbed their fishing poles and headed out to Salvador WMA. In six hours, they caught 36 sac-a-lait and two perch. Marcantel scored the biggest catch of the day, a 14-inch sac-a-lait.
A couple of days later, Hebert decided to make another trip before the cold front came through.
He tried his luck again on Feb. 6, but this time he went alone and racked up again, catching 18 sac-a-lait, one bass, and two catfish.
The avid angler said he used a blue and white tube jig and a black and chartreuse tube jig on both days and feels that the weather has everything to do with his success.
“On an overcast day the fish are more aggressive but when the sun comes out, they slack off,” he said.
Hebert said, “This time of the year sac-a-lait bite well because they are getting ready to get on their nest to lay eggs, but can be fished all year.”
Salvador Wildlife Management Area is located about 12 miles southwest of New Orleans and can be accessed by boat through Bayou Segnette in Westwego, Pier 90 in Luling, or Bayou Des Allemands in Des Allemands.
This area is great for freshwater fishing for bass, bream, crappie, catfish, drum and garfish.
