Aerial herbicide application completed on Wham Brake at Russell Sage WMA

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has completed a 1,000-acre aerial herbicide treatment on the Wham Brake Impoundment at Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area (WMA) to control invasive giant cutgrass.

The treatment is part of planned habitat management efforts designed to encourage moist-soil vegetation to support migratory waterfowl and other wetland wildlife species. Wham Brake will remain temporarily dry before being partially re-flooded in early fall, contingent on rainfall.

Russell Sage WMA spans more than 38,000 acres across Morehouse, Ouachita, Richland and Caldwell parishes and is one of Louisiana’s premier public waterfowl areas. The WMA includes managed bottomland hardwood forests, moist-soil units, green-tree impoundments, flooded agricultural fields, fishing areas, birding sites, and provides hunting opportunities for a multitude of species.
