The “Skeeter” is a beautifully restored Sid Craft short-sponson D-Stock hydroplane racing boat, paired with a classic Mercury Mark 55H hydroplane racing engine. This type of racing hydroplane represents an iconic era of American outboard racing, where lightweight wooden hulls and high-performance Mercury racing engines dominated competitive hydroplane events.

The boat retains most of its original structure and has been carefully restored using traditional materials and methods. The deck and cowl are constructed from marine-grade BS1088 mahogany, finished with lightweight Ceconite fabric treated with butyl and nitrate dope before receiving epoxy and Epifane clear varnish for durability and classic appearance. The side rails remain original, and the bow and transom handles are stainless steel bowden cable in the original style.

The hull bottom and sponsons have been refinished, and the transom is stained with aluminum plates on both sides, complemented by a classic turn fin. Steering is controlled via steel cable through NOS Perko pulleys, maintaining period-correct racing hardware. The cockpit coamings were replaced with new mahogany, and the original fuel tank mounting board remains in the rear of the boat.

Power comes from a Mercury Mark 55H, a late-version example of Mercury’s legendary D-class racing engine. This particular engine was restored by a noted engine builder and collector, with polished aluminum surfaces and retained original color emblems. The engine has been kept in a heated, climate-controlled environment and remains a fine example of classic Mercury racing engineering. Included are the original steering bar and a painted 3¼-gallon racing fuel tank with hose.

This vintage hydroplane would make a standout addition to any vintage racing boat collection, maritime museum display, or enthusiast’s collection of classic outboard racing equipment.
