Louisiana Sportsman to defend trademark
Louisiana’s outdoorsmen have really taken to the Sportsman logo, and the trademarked fleur-de-lis is everywhere. From T-shirts to decals to tattoos, it seems everyone wants to sport the eye-catching design. Unfortunately, unscrupulous businesses are taking advantage of the craze to produce unlicensed likenesses and sell them to unsuspecting customers. That has forced Louisiana Sportsman’s parent company, Louisiana Publishing, to take action to defend the trademark.

Hopedale trout transitioning to the bottom
While the trout transition to the inside around Hopedale has long been completed, Captain Charlie Thomason with Bayou Charters (504-278-FISH) says there’s another kind of transition happening right now. “The trout are really starting to fall to the bottom,” he said. “And the fishing is awesome.”

Duck survey show mixed results
While some hunters killed some birds during the opening weekend, many in the southeast didn't have much to keep their attention. Many hunters were disappointed with the West Zone opening of the duck season, with most reports being of dismal numbers. “Hunted north of Kaplan, (and) what an opener,” LouisianaSportsman.com user mr-crappie wrote yesterday. “Five hunters Saturday (killed) two bluewing teal; four hunters Sunday … didn’t see a duck.”

Wind forcing early bite around DuLarge
Two weeks ago, Captain Bill Lake with Bayou Guide Service (985-851-6015) was crushing the speckled trout in Lake Mechant and Sister Lake at the rate of 100 per day. For the last few days, though, the wind has taken about 40 trout off the top of that. However, he says 60-trout days are only possible right now if you get out there at the crack of dawn.

Duck sightings spotty, but conditions are promising
While geese have moved into Louisiana in numbers, ducks seemingly haven't migrated in large numbers yet. However, habitat conditions are excellent and set the stage for a great season when cold fronts finally push the birds southward. It seems like here in south Louisiana we get things in extremes. It’s either hot or cold, with rarely an in-between. Sometimes we pray for rain to alleviate drought, and other times we get floods. As it relates to the waterfowl hunting conditions here in Louisiana, it seems like more often than not we’re praying for rain to flood our fields and backwaters – but this year it looks like Mother Nature has outdone herself.

User BlakeC experiences hunt of lifetime with 6-year-old son
Blake Charles, known as BlakeC to LouisianaSportsman.com users, shared a priceless experience with his 6-year-old son Jon Burton this weekend when the young hunter killed his first deer. Most people think of their dream hunt as going on a trip to the Midwest and harvesting a 150-class buck. My dream hunt came true this weekend when I had the pleasure of experiencing my son’s first deer hunt.

Toledo Bend giant salvinia mat treated by Texas agency
Runoff flushed giant salvinia out of Toledo Bend's upper shallows and caused huge mats of vegetation along a 16-mile stretch of the reservoir. Texas and Sabine River Authority officials invested $200,000 to spray 2,000 acres of the invasive species. Two thousand acres of giant salvinia on Toledo Bend were treated this weekend by a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department contractor after the invasive species was washed out of the reservoir’s upper reaches into a huge mat that backed up at the Pendleton Bridge.
