Anybody seeing Teal?

September 06, 2017 at 9:45am

You now cant run a mud boat in Plaquemines Parish unless you are on your private land and/or you have written permission from who you are leasing from. If you have to pass through public land or someone elses property to get there your are doing so illegally.

Any body catching crawfish in the pearl?

March 24, 2015 at 1:32pm

Looks like the air cooled engine restriction for the Biloxi WMA thread was removed. Someone must be upset.

March 04, 2015 at 2:01pm

If you hunt the Biloxi Marsh with a mud boat you should contact LDWF. They are fixing to restrict it down to 16 hp and less with staight shaft only. I dont know if it will do any good, I think it is coming from the land owner and if LDWF does not do what they say they may pull the lease.

Wait until after the full moon on Monday the 8th of August then go look. Don't get to excited about no birds until after that. Remember they are photo period migraters. When they sense the days are getting shorter they will come if they are capable. Last year alot of the birds were not flight ready so it took longer due to the late winter. They came in smaller sporatic groups that were hard to concentrate and hunt. Hopefully this hard winter we just went through does not cause the same problem as last year. Larry says he saw alot of teal up north and the numbers seem to be very high so I am hopefull. As long as there are no major rain events to temporarily flood areas above us between now and the opener we should be good. They love freshly flooded field type areas to feed. Regarless they have to come through us and Texas to get to South America and Texas is dry so I suspect again that Western LA will be covered in overflow and again have a great seasona as usual. Just my 2 cents.

Who ever gets the DU magazine please read the latest issue then tell me that DU has nothing to do with helping rice farmers with flooding schedules and habitat management work. Then get on the website and search DU projects and tell me how many are in southeast LA,(8-10 since DU inception) most are close to Mississippi and Arkansas. Then look up how much money DU collects from Louisiana per year.(State government 2013; $10,217,106.00, DU suporters 2013; $3,627,365.00) Then tell me I am nuts for thinking that they drive short stoping. It may not be intentional but that is what is happening.

March 14, 2014 at 10:55am

Lets see we have had no tropical storms or hurricanes, check, we have had a good duck hatch this year, check, we have tons of feed and SAV's, check, we have had many acrtic fronts to push birds, check, areas north of us are frozen, check, the excuse of a 'delyed migration' has passed, check. Yet I still wonder were are the ducks. Are we being short stopped with heaters and agriculture up north I would think so. It cost money to pump fields when there is drought which makes the bottom line less attactive so they don't provide habitat during drought leaving the birds no other choice but to come down here and the governnment will pay them for lost crops. Sad thing is we can do nothing about it except pray for drought and higher produce prices so that we can have more ducks to shoot at. Please someone else do research and tell that my deduction is nuts. I figure that only when there is drought we do well with large numbers of ducks.

It appears that this reports page has become nothing more than an avenue for 'Guides' to advertise and tell half truths. I guess once the duck season starts I will have to find another site to get info.

Gray duck extravaganza.

November 14, 2011 at 11:02am

Great opening weekeng with friends 51 birds in two days. Dont know where the greentop came from. And by the way who invited the gnats.

November 14, 2011 at 10:58am

Three shots 4 dead ducks. Sometimes its better to be lucky than good. Done at 6:18 and there were not many birds to be seen.

September 12, 2011 at 8:36am

I have a lottery hunt at White Lake rice field in early January and I was wondering if anybody has already been and if its been good or bad. Thanks for the info.

Ha sany one seen teal in the Biloxi Marsh. I would like to make a hunt this weekend but I don't have time to research. I would appreciate any info, thanks.

September 23, 2010 at 12:58pm

Has any one seen teal in the Biloxi Marsh.

September 10, 2010 at 12:28pm

We went to our lease near the Biloxi Marsh WMA and saw very few birds. There were a few teal an mottled ducks but not very many greys. I think the high water has affected the wigeon grass negativly. To those that hunt the Biloxi Marsh good luck because it does not look good.

November 04, 2009 at 2:54pm

The 1st split was OK not as good as last year we are killing ducks but not always the limit. It is time for some scouting and good luck for the second split. Good luck to all.

December 01, 2008 at 11:20am

I will be in Kaplan on Friday opening which has lots of birds and in St. Bernard Parish on Saturday. We have not seen a lot in St. Bernard past few years for teal season but I am hopeful.

Do you hunt the same pond every time? I been hunting out there for a while now and it seems that if I hunt a pond and kill a limit the next time I go to that pond its one or two. I hunted a new pond this past weekend and shot 6. My borther in law was 500 yards away and was hunting his pond for the third time and shot two. His first hunt was a limit and second and third hunts were 2 birds each hunt. I hunted a pond opening weekend and killed the limit went out there for the next hunt and killed two. Im am just going to hunt a new spot evey time and see wha that does.

You can get to good spots about 10 miles from the launch. My mud boat went about 25 miles an hour and it took us about 30 to 40 minutes to get there. 12 foot boat is a bit small for that long of a run. We will be using a faster outboard this year since the air cooled motors have been banned by the infinite wisdom of the land owner and the LDWF. Watch for the wooden dames in the middle of the bayous marked on the LDWF WMA map for the area.

There is a threashold. The birds have to be here to hunt them. You got kids hunting in October for crying out loud that obsurd. Let the birds get here and aclalmate to the surroundings before the blasting begins. They won't have a chance to evaluate the food source and determine weather its worth staying despite the constant barage of steel. By the way Larry why are there no stats on the Biloxi WMA is it not a coastal WMA.

I guess Larry has to ask himself why he even recommends any season dates. The politcally driven commission will do what they want. Not for the benefit of the rsource but for the benefit of personal gain or the gain of personal friends. Who ever designed the commision system is an idiot. The biologist do the research for a reason. Based on the commission decisions we area paying the LDWF bioloist for nothing.

Its a public resource accesible to all except those individuals who operate surface drive mud boats. Again who ever thinks that any action taken here and now will prevent os slow down marsh loss is delusional. Let people enjoy it while we have it because it will be gone soon enough.

I guess outboards are incapable of running birds from an area give me a brake. I dont think the simple minded understand the implications. If the land owner says no outboards or mud boats then what. No one can fish, hunt or pass through an area that should be legaly navigable water bottoms. If it was not a mangement area and I wanted to fish the Biloxi marsh with the all mighty destructive surface drive motor he would not be able to stop me unless he called the police to get me for trespasing assuming the water bottom I was on was not a state owned water bottom. The only way this works is because it is a management area and LDWF can reglate and enforce rules on it.

They passed it. Now there is 40,000 acres of marsh that I cant access or pass through based on my specific engine type. That there is one reason I quit working for the LDWF. Politics and no one is allowed to think.

If you are going to allow 25 hp godevel boats to tear up the marsh and twin engine outboard charter boats to erode the canals you lose the validity of the argument. Not to mention the bow fisherman that tear up the area at night with outboards in shallow water. What is the real reason because that restriction wont prevent land loss. It will continue. Boats or no boats.

A comment titled: Re: Biloxi marsh in response to a report titled: Biloxi marsh

If the Biloxi Marsh company did decide to restrict the waterways to the public it would take a large on water police force to enforce no trespassing. I might just figure out what the cost of the tickets will be for running the surface drive in the management area after this ridicululous move takes place and work it into the hunting budget. I am sure that there will be agents to enforce this for the first half of the season. But I doubt that they will be out there with any frequency for the long term. I have hunted out there for a long time and only saw and agent out there one time at the launch. The whole notion of restricting a specific engine type in a 40,000 acre area is ridiculous. LDWF does not have the manpower for that. Aside from that look at the Google aireals all of the bayous and canals that have already been there are widening from boat traffic in general. Especially charter captains fishing the area day in a and day out to make a living. Every time I have gone hunting I see the smae captains running boats with 6 people loaded down sometimes with twin engines running through there destroying the marsh. Its unfortunate that land ownere knows nothing about erosion and causes of wetland loss. Katrina caused more problems then anythig else out there next would be oil and gas, then wind, then boat wakes, then mud boats.

News flash the marsh is washing away and there is nothing we can do about it. Whoever thinks that reducing mud boat traffic will change anything is delusional. Regulate the mud boats don't ban them. Nothing is going to help, sediment in the river in not enough to re-create what happpned hundreds of years ago. Delacroix has all but washed away with a fresh water diversion pumping it. Hurricanes and oil industry will do more dammage than anything like mud boats ever will.

I think the water needs to come down a bit and we will have to wait for this cold front to pass and things to start warming up.

I guess a 25 horse power long tail air cooled engine does less damage to marsh than a 35 horse surface drive. I can definantly see how an engine with a long tail that digs deeper into the mud can be less damging than a air cooled engine that runs on the surface of the mud. Seems to me that LDWF and or the landowner have something against surface drive engines with no interest in the health of marsh. Who is Driving this ship????????? Common sense must be on the bottom with the anchor.

A comment titled: Re: Biloxi marsh in response to a report titled: Biloxi marsh

Its not an LAA. No air cooled engines any where on the management area any time unless its 16 hp or less and a long tail. Yes this is ridiculous as far a navigation. People with other leases not owned by Biloxi marsh land company have to get a permit to pass through the management area. Outboards can go where they want when they want. And you can garauntee that the LDWF enforcement will be out there to make sure the rules are followed instead of dealing with the real violations. No i did not take it down so it must be the site administrator. He must be friends with the Biloxi Marsh genius.

A comment titled: Re: Biloxi WMA in response to a report titled: Biloxi WMA

This is not a proposal an for LAA this is no mud boats over 16 hp at anytime on the management area. Not for fising not for hunting not for passing through no mud boats at all. This is why I suggest giving uo the lease. At least it allows people to be able to fish out there. If they cant afford a 40,000 dollar bay boat.
