Pecan island final count 178 on the year great season. Way better than expected considering the first split was a bust. Shot a lot of good ducks the last few weekends, lots of teal and good numbers of big ducks. Even had a cinnamon teal killed on the property we hunt on

Finally shot some ducks this weekend 42 in two hunts. Limited out both days, been slow all year. We only shot 65 the whole first split and finally had a great weekend. Hopefully it gets better from here.

December 23, 2017 at 5:33pm

Slow first split shot 62 total. Way below average on the year. Lots of scalp and teal. Hope the second split is better, everyone on this end doing the same if not worse. The number of ducks down in Pecan Island is way down from the last few years.

Finished up with a great weekend down in Pecan Island, just not to good with the ducks. I had a blast on Saturday took my wife and 10 year old daughter on a quick late morning hunt. Arrived at the blind at about 8:45 ,shot a beautiful male blue wing teal and one spoonie in about a half hour . That was all I needed to make my little girl happy, to get to see the dog work and take a few shots at the decoys with her BB gun. The blue wing is going on the wall full color and no broken wings. Total count on the year was 142 birds, down from last year's count of 176. Shot mostly teal but did manage 9 mallards on the season as well, mix in a few greys and of course about 20 smilies and it wasn't to bad of a year. November can't get here fast enough.

Hunted the PI this weekend did OK on Saturday, we shot 10 on the morning mostly teal but not a bad hunt. It started off real slow but picked up once the fog lifted. On Sunday shot 6, same thing 5 teal and 1 ring neck. One weekend left hopefully the last one is good.

January 15, 2017 at 3:07pm

Hunted pecan island this weekend, man what a let down on Saturday, shot only two teal all morning. All that freezing weather and no birds. Everything was frozen from the decoys to the dog, you would think all that wind and cold air would have been the best hunt of the season. Well I guess that's why they call it hunting and not killing. On Sunday it was much better, two of us killed 7, the best part was a pair of mallards, witch one of them a big green head will be going on the wall. It was a beautiful duck with no damage at all. It will be my friends first mount ever, he was all pumped up. Only two weekends left, hope it goes good till the end.

Hunted pecan island this weekend shot 9 Saturday and 7 Sunday. It was a little slower than usual but still not to bad. Most people we talked to didn't do to good , about 3 to 4 birds per blind was the average per blind. Got 4 dozen of nice crabs off the wharf as well, not a bad weekend. Happy new year to all.

December 31, 2016 at 2:23pm

Hunted pecan island this weekend ,did pretty good killed 25 in two days. On Saturday shot only 7, but my son shot his first grey duck .Had fun just watching that ,he's shot plenty of ducks in the past, but that was his first big duck he' s ever shot. Sunday was much better killed 18 total , mostly teal with a couple of big ducks. Not a bad start for the second split, hopefully it'll keep up the rest of the season.

December 18, 2016 at 8:32pm

Hunted pecan island this weekend shot 17 total. Only three on Friday, but limmeted out on Saturday. Sunday was even slower, only shot two. Still not a bad weekend, had two greenheads, and a couple of greys, one wodie, three spoonies, the rest teal. Hopefully the next front brings in some new birds.

November 20, 2016 at 3:11pm

Hunted In pecan island this weekend did real good on Saturday, shot 17 all teal and 2 spoonies. Sunday much slower only had 6. Still a great weekend.

November 13, 2016 at 2:33pm

So for this year we've done really good down in pecan island. Killed 95 ducks in 6 hunts with about a 3 person average. Mostly teal, but the last couple of hunts we did really good on the big ducks. This past weekend , shot 10 mallards, 2 pintail, and a few greys mixed in. Had 2 good hunts both days taking limets with no problem.

November 26, 2013 at 9:04pm

Finally put together two good weekends in a row down in Pecan Island. Didnt limit out but had some good hunts .Saturday five hunters 21 ducks 3 geese, mostley teal but had a couple greys and even some red heads witch we dont normally shoot. Sunday was a lot slower but still managed 7 ducks. Final count 16 hunts 135 ducks 3 geese, with about a three person per hunt average, way down from normal. Not a bad year but not the best eather. Maybe next season things can get back to normal, with out all this high water.

A co worker of mine just returned on a trip from Alaska and caught quite a bit of Halibut. He had about 30 lbs of filet sent back home on Fed- Ex. I am trying to get a few diferent recipes for him to try. Any suggestions ?

I like the name Guage, that's my dogs name. He is a three year old British lab, definitely different not many labs with that name. My neighbors dogs name is Bruce, and my others dog is maverick. Both different, seems like every other dog Is named drake, or duke or some other popular name

I would defiantly have to agree, not a mottled duck black all the way. Looking at the colors much darker and no white spectrum under the wing. We shot a limit of mottled ducks yesterday on our lease in Pecan Island, we shoot them all year long. Congrats on a rare kill .

We hunted in Pecan Island first split, the blind we hunt did real good shooting 107 ducks in 11 hunts. Everyone else we talked too had real bad first splits all around us, way to much water, and not enough cool weather. Hope the second split brings in some new birds to finish off the season.

We hunt in Pecan Island and in the last two weekends we had a big increase in green wings from opening weekend being mostly blue wing, to almost all green wing this past weekend. This was the most green wings we've had in the last three duck seasons, I still don't think the big push of green wing has gotten here yet. Hope the next couple of cold fronts will bring in a good push of them.

you will not have any problems going across lake dautreive as long as you don't take a left when you leave the landing, if you leave and go the direction you plotted out, you will have no problems.

Call the Sportsman in Abbeville, they or the distributers in this area. They might do it there, or know of someone that does it in this area.

we also hunt down in Pecan Island, and launch at a small private launch right off the freshwater bayou road. Guess I will have to do the same thing and start locking my dog kennel inside the truck. It's shame you can't even go hunting in the middle of nowhere , and still have to worry about thieves to lazy to get a real job stealing from a truck on the side of the road . Guess we'll have to start hiding in the bushes at the landing with a few rounds in the shotgun.

Same thing down in pecan island, very few mature birds. Out of 95 we killed the past 3 weeks only about 8 to 10 birds not full of pin feathers. We even had 10 mallards this past weekend, with only 4 of them mature

We hunt not far from ya'll, and had a awesome weekend. We hunt near Pecan Island and finished the weekend with 74 ducks, mixed, with greys, red heads teal and spoonies. We could have killed lots of ducks yesterday, we had a limet of 24 by 8:30 and could of easily shot many more as the greys and pintail were flying by the hundreds when we left. an't wait till next weekend

Was at pecan island last weekend at my camp and it was slow there as well. We fished out of the Exon landing and only managed 2 nice catfish and one keeper drum. The shrimp should start showing up any day now, but my best bet is early May they should be there in good numbers.

I would deffently have to agree with you there. We hunt in Pecan Island and the last two weeks we have not hunted in any of our blinds and have still managed to make good hunts. Hunting later in the morning this time of the year is def. a plus as most of the ducks we shoot is between 8:00 and 11:30 in the morning. Moving decoys around is also a good idea as we have been taking 1-2 dozen each time we go and put them in different piles all over our pond. We have been hunting off points in natural cover and the ducks just come right in, not much calling required this time of year. If we would still be sitting in our blind with 100 plus decoys right in front of it we might be scratching out 2-3 birds a hunt. Thinking about grabbing 2-3 decoys this last weekend and do some pothole hunting, this always seems to work later in the year.

A comment titled: duck i.d. in response to a report titled: Anyone know what species this is?

I would have to guess a very, very young imature green head. If you look at the beak it is solid yellow just like all male mallards, not spotted like hens. The blue on white tells you it is not a mottled duck, and if you look close at the chest you can start to see the browwn patch starting to develope. And if you also look at the tail you can see where the green is starting to turn just a little. I have seen plenty of green heads up north in Canada killed that look very simular to this in their early stages of development. Just my opinion
