Fished out in Bay Eloi this past week and the White trout are really thick out there right now. Between every 10 Whities we landed a nice Speck(15 to 18 inches). Tried all kinds of different baits to distract the Whities but they are ravenous! Anybody had any luck with a bait they don't care for too much but that the Specks prefer? The closest thing that worked was a Gulp under a Bolt cork fished as loud as possible(constant popping). Live shrimp was a total waste of time as the Whities tore them up. Average size of the Whities was 12 inches so we did keep a few of them.
Well, the summertime fishing patterns are in full swing for Bay Eloi. Went out Friday and Saturday in search of specks. Friday worked southwest side mostly without much success. The MRGO rocks were dead! After such an awesome May and June at the rocks it seems they have really slowed down as is usually the case in July. We did manage 22 trout fishing live shrimp 4ft under VersaMaxx corks. Tried freelining but no takers. On Saturday worked more northeasterly towards deadmans island. We bounced A LOT from structure to structure and boated plenty trout but only 28 keepers. Only change made was to fish deeper under cork like around 5ft. We caught plenty more fish but lots of smallies and some cats! I know the big ones are out in the 15 to 20 ft water range but just cant get there in my boat with the chop we been having. The new VersaMaxx Wired cork was awesome. The only wired cork i've ever seen that you can change the depth without having to retie knots. Pretty cool. Next week will be redfish hunting around Biloxi marsh area with some Matrix and gold spoons!!
Ok, so its that time of year when you have to catch 100 to maybe keep 20 trout. For the last 5 years at least I've have been challenged with this issue during july/august. Where the heck do the slabs go. I've tried the deeper water rigs(around Central) with some success. I've fished at night at those same rigs with more success. Just dont want to have to do the night thing all the time....it's lots of work!! Going to work top waters real hard tomorrow. Any other ideas??
Just changed out a 2002 yamaha 250 hpdi for 2014 yamaha f250 4.2l. Was getting 2.8 mpg with the hpdi, barely getting 2 mpg with the new 4 stroke. Has excellent power, real quiet, and decent top end, but fuel mileage is horrible. Is this a 'breakin period' issue or am i just screwed?! Both motors topped out at 5900 rpm's. Hpdi went 47mph top speed, the four stroke goes 44mph. They both cruised at 4500 rpm's doing about 34mph.
