Sure is a lack of deer pics????Everyone struggling???

November 24, 2013 at 12:31pm

Its Sunday morning, people are up and planning for church. Is it a home cooked meal afterwards or a visit to the local eatery of choice. I to hurried around to attend church. Donning camo and warm clothes as I attend the sunrise service of my choice. Its a beautiful church adorned with the finest tapestry of green pines and changing leaves. The stained glass is filtered sunlight through camo burlap. My choir of chirps and whistles and occasional far off goose honks are music to my ears..My pew is my deer stand, and yes I set on the front row as humbled honoured guest. I do not have to be told What God has done, I can see it all around me! If more could see this, they would know this is not happenstance. You appreciate the complexity of Gods work as you see it only goes astray when we try and play more than our assigned roles. I will set here basking in the warming sunrise. Soon I will have to leave church and prepare to rejoin the world for a few days. I will thank God for letting me attend his natural church once more before I leave. It will give me solace to know as I set in traffic monday morning that church is held daily here, with or without me. Hopefully I can attend again soon!

Day one could not have been scripted any better, the weather a glorious clear and 38! Almost one queue a beautiful buck came out and my aim was true and the dread of a buckless year was lifted. The old Brown box I sat in had yet another memory to hold. Even at 52 the adrenaline surge gave me the shakes. I guess deer hunters in a way are adrenaline junkies. What sets us apart is once we stand over our kill there is a moment of remorse and respect for such a beautiful creature. I do hunt or kill out of any anger , its primal, in my DNA. Just as a wolf teaches her pup, the art of the hunt and kill, so did my father teach me. That is the difference between a hunter and a poacher, the value and respect of the life you took and the memory created that keeps it alive. My memories are rekindled by something as simple as tarnished shell casing on a stand floor. I can read scribbled notes on others stand walls and almost be in the moment with them, I guess the modern version of cave wall drawings. My how we have evolved, no I don't for a second think my ancestors were an ape, but I do know we were primitive at first, God brought us along slowly so we could hopefully learn to handle all he gives us. I fear as each baby is born the connection to our primal side is being severed. I saw a 15 year old boy kill his second buck yesterday, he was happy , but not the adrenaline fuelled teenager my generation and the ones before me were. It was as no big deal . I am not blaming him, he seems be a great young man, but I do not see the eyes of a hunter yet. Maybe it is the realistic video games that de-sensitized the new generation what it means to be given the gift of an animal's life. Its evolution and it seems unstoppable. Somewhere on a cave wall or some old journal there is the same said of us. So I am going set a couple more hours and be primal with my insulated mug of coffee and Little Debbie oatmeal pie, think about how they would have drawn me on a cave wall . There is a new shell casing in the corner I can ponder on,,,,,,,,,

Good news is we got our membership roster filled, bad news is its apparent how hard this is getting to be. It took some work and multiple newspaper and online outlets to get this done. Our dues are less than a thousand, it is hard to imagine how some of these higher dollar clubs survive.Multiple ads on both this site, Facebook and local papers generated a lot of interest but mostley window shoppers. It worries me that maybe we are seeing the decline of our sport and passion due to lack of interest and the money it takes to pursue it. So we survive to hunt another year! Be here before you know it, just like the next years dues!!!

Is it time for Louisiana to look at possibly decreasing deer seasons and limits? The whole premise behind primitive weapons season is now a joke. I hunt in Caldwell Parish , you can hunt deer almost 5 months out of the year. I belong to an old established club and our numbers have been free falling last 3 years. We have been in DMAP since it started and had a No Spike rule last ten years. In spite of our best efforts our numbers continue to decline regardless of how much effort the membership puts in to hunts. We have suffered from aggressive timber harvesting , but we were on the decline before that. From what I hear this is State wide. I would like to see us go back to the old season structure in area 2 where season opened the 1st Saturday in November and closed the 1st Sunday in January. Do away with the Primitive weapons season and open Bow Season October 15th through mid -January. Have two any deer tags accompanied by possibly 1 or 2 additional Doe Tags. Is there science behind my thoughtsÂ….NO Â…but there is not much science behind what we do now and it appears to not be working. We need try something, I am sure there are smarter guys than I and can figure something out that will help.

And you are a lucky man, the memories your kids make are the ones that will be with them when you are gone. My fondest memories of youth are not of Christmas, high school ,or sports. Its the afternoons spent with my father and gradfather in a boat and the days at deer camp with my dad and his friends.

Wow we have a lot of true hunting experts, don't get me wrong the price has driven me out of the corn game and I may buy one bag of rice bran a year. What does bother me is all you guys professing to be hunters and saying guys that do corn are not. Most people get to hunt a few weekend days a year, and this is after investing possibly $1000s of dollars in it. Some have kids and grand kids that they want to see and possibly kill a deer. Quit being so judgemental and hunt like you want to and keep your bashing down. We do not need to drive anymore people from the sport than are already leaving it. Only way to keep people interested is some measure of success. PS: I have hunted over 40 years and killed more deer than most, bucks have always been more nocturnal except during the rut. Stop blaming it on corn.

limit used to be 6 bucks but doe days were very limited,We used to have to stand in line at the rack year after year. Yes lot of young bucks but happy hunters, don't get me wrong I have killed my share does and younger bucks.I am for trying something new and I know one fix does not fit all regions of the state.I am a hunter that limits out or close most years but i hunt a lot and keep and use what i kill.We have long seasons and liberal limits, maybe to much.....

Whats so bad a lot of the general public does not realize the stock, color or shape does not matter on how a weapon works.A semi auto Marlin 22 is same weapon. Guns are not the problem, mass hysteria will only feed the problem and penalize law abiding folks. Disarming us is the goal and using this tragedy against children to do it is reprehensible

Jake we have deer, we have some really nice deer. we see them on game cams and a few get killed every year. What I am talking about is a general down turn state wide. As far as your family getting out Beaucoup< I miss your dad. One of the better hunters i ever had the pleasure to share the woods with.I miss him every season. As far as Joe Ware he has probably killed more bucks in absolute fair chase conditions as anyone in this State. He is a great steward of the land and he owns hundreds of acres of some of the best habitat left in this state. He keeps it as untouched as possible. Politics and personalities clash in all clubs, you were very young and to my knowledge never killed a deer or hunted as much as your dad and brothers. Tell your dad Merry Christmas from me!!

A comment titled: One additional thing in response to a report titled: What you think!

4 Years ago as a club it looked as if we turned a corner, we had guys seeing multiple bucks each outing and we killed a reasonable amount of deer. We dont over hunt our area as a rule. We have suffered from timber harvest over a larger area. Hopefully as the habitat improves our numbers will. I would like to see the State come in with more agressive managment.

A comment titled: Clubs in response to a report titled: What you think!

I am president of our club, we could not find enough members willing to pay our lease if we went to a 6 or 8 pt rule for the club. We need some type of regional state mandated managment plan that works, NOT DMAP but something from the state based on areas or regions in the State based on population and avalible habitat. What we are doing is clearly not working as a club or a State.

A comment titled: Spikes in response to a report titled: Cull Those 'Inferior' Spikes? Maybe Not!

It all seems to come down to nutrition, genetics , and age. Who knows what you can grow in a optimal enviroment. What it comes down to is hunt with like minded people. If you want big bucks hunt with selective hunters who kill very little. Don't try impose your self restrictions on what is a good deer and what is not. This whole argument is bad for deer hunting as a whole. Dont get me wrong, I like to kill good deer and killed my share. With that said I seen hunters new to the sport or have never killed much just excited about a big doe as I am a marginal 8 point. I have seen this spike argument discussed a hundred ways. Enjoy what we have left of out tradition, dont abuse our gift, but take what you can legally use within the carrying capacity of the envitroment. Don't make others feel like killing a spike is a bad thing, once they kill a few most work out to be a little more selective.I know I am a little off point here but to the average weekend hunter who reads these post it appears we are saying everyone needs to be a 130 BC hunter...one day i fear we may not get to hunt at all.

A comment titled: Caldwell/Winn very poor in response to a report titled: Let's Have Some Hunting Club Reports

WE have a older established lease in Caldwell bordering Winn Parish. Our club was hit with heavy timber harvesting over the summer and fall. This all but ruined our deer season. We saw lots deer on camera and a member with ajoining private land seemed to have a normal or above normal population. Timber harvesting along with many factors are affecting our kill ratio state wide, couple this with above average warm dry weather and it was just a perfect storm for below normal deer kills, for us any way. In my opinion we do not need to jump in to any far reaching changes state wide yet. Deer along with other animals and fish run in cycles, some years your up some your down.

These guys on TV are just glorified door to door salesmen coming up with a pitch for the product they own or is sponsoring them. Its got to the point it worse than NASCAR on how product placement and slogans are used. If they say it enough on their show it sticks. These new buzz words are just that, useless. Snort..weeze good grief..Code Blue ..come on. Cull buck, kinda devalues the animal. If most of this tuff would be taken off TV we as a grou would be better off. Dont get me started on Big Bill Busby
