Rut in East and West Feleciana

Has anyone seen the signs of the rut starting in the Felecianas? I have not found a single scrape yet. I am seeing does but no bucks seem to be following. I had to kill a doe yesterday afternoon just because the rut seems to be late and I couldn't take it any more. Watched her too long while she was feeding.

Rut is gearing up
Congrats on the doe! I hunt off Hwy 10 between Jackson and St. Francisville in West Feliciana Parish. I got a nice 10 point (swollen neck, dark tarsal glands, just finished rubbbing a tree when I shot him) last Thursday morning 12/17. I have been hunting pretty hard and saw my first scrape around the Monday before. I saw the beginning of rubs the Friday before that. In my opinion it will still be a week or two but it can't hurt to get out there now. This article should give you more insight - http://www.louisianasportsman.com/details.php?id=1959
Good luck!

I hunt near the Bluffs golf course, and so far we've seen no rut activity other than scrapes. On the full moon we had at the beginning of the month I was getting 4 or 5 nice bucks per camera working scrapes, but they have quit working them for now...I saw a couple scrapes this weekend that had just been cleaned a little bit. Also, our neighbors videoed two good bucks fighting Saturday afternoon, so it should be getting ready to go off.

I am hunting just north of Jackson. I am stating to think our buck to doe ratio may be out of whack and they just are not having to do much chasing. The spots where there are usually scraps in mid December just don't have them this year. Not sure why.

I am on 421 along thompson creek. I scouted the whole place yesterday and saw maybe 6 scrapes that looked as they have not been checked since before the rain. I saw two 2.5 yr old bucks this weekend and one just looked at the does at the other end of the road and one pu this head down and trotted towards 6 does, but they scattered and he just stopped and then fed in the plot by himself for 25 minutes. I am thinking we still have 1-2 weeks, one guy said he saw a spike chase a doe

Natchez
I hunt in Natchez and yesterday was wild! I saw a 140 inch ten point that i spooked walking out and then had a big 8 point grunting a chasing a doe that evening come forty yards from me. Everyone in our lease is seeing bucks. It has been the best week of chasing I have seen in a long time. BTW the reason I didnt shoot is because I've already killed one with my bow that scored 155 3/8 and i only get one buck as a guest with my dad. I've tried to kill does for the last three hunts and its hard to pull the trigger on a hot doe with a big one on her butt.

I don't know what was special about this evening's hunt, but the deer moved. I was on the same food plot I was on Friday evening when I only saw 5 small deer and today there were 15. I had two 8pts., a 7pt., a 6pt., 2 spikes, 7 does, and 3 yearlings. The 7pt. fought with all the other bucks before he wandered off and then the two 8's started getting after it. The spikes were doing some casual head butting. The 7pt. was the most aggressive and he's a buck I've never seen before. They are apparently beginning to wander a little, but maybe not the big ones just quite yet. Some friends were hunting nearby and they saw 34 deer between the 3 of them. My buddy's wife got her first deer, too. It was a 13 3/4 inch 7pt. that weighed 165lbs. and another guy hunting nearby got a 16 1/4 inch 8pt. weighing 170lbs. Like I said, don't know what was special about today but it was a good one.

Hunt about 5 miles northwest of Clinton. The smaller bucks are trying to chase, and most of the does are not quite in heat yet. We have seen significantly less does over the last two weeks probably due to the bucks harassing them. This morning, I did see a nice buck chasing does along with a spike, but could not get a shot on the buck. They crossover to the next property, and I hear a shot close by so I guess they shot the buck. More does should come in heat over the next week leading to the full moon.

Hunted W. Felic. this evening and did not see a deer between waves of light rain. Winds were sporadic and warm-up may have caused them to lay up this afternoon/evening.

No activity yet, but I have been leaving hard liquor all over the woods hoping to put them in mood. It aint far off.

yesterday evening
sat in my usual box stand yesterday evening and only saw the usual suspects...nothing but my spikes, 4pts. and yearlings. It has been tough just to see a mature doe in the last few weeks. Don't know what's up with that. Bout to go get in a stand now and hope I stay dry. Also, checked a camera card from another food plot. It was aimed at a scrape. Got 2 pics of a really nice 8pt working the scrape at 7:20 p.m. on the 20th, but that was all.

this past weekend we saw numerous doe groups and each one was running and very aggitated. Scrapes are being worked hard since the last rain stopped and saw one nice buck that was bristled up and was on the hunt sat evening.

I had some cameras out for the last week and two of them took pics of 4 different rack bucks working scrapes this morning around 9a.m.! Them suckers know when it's Christmas! Hunted this evening and nothing with antlers came out until well after legal shooting hours...They workin on their "night moves". I could see my shadow from the moon on the walk out...Finally get the weather and of course we get the moon! Bah Humbug!

mornings
We didn't see much of anything over the holiday weekend. What little we did see was all in the mornings. Also, cameras are still getting pics of nice bucks in the mornings during daylight hours...I've noticed the barage of big buck picture postings has slowed down...At least it's not just me not seeing them!

Unfortunately I'm unable to hunt in the mornings this week, but my buddy is off and he hunted this morning...After he had seen a mix of does and small bucks this morning, he got back to his truck and was driving down the gravel road and saw 2 different shooters...One was alone...The other (and also the biggest) was hot on the trail of a doe. Just so happens they were coming straight from my food plot! When they saw his truck they turned and went straight back to my food plot...I'm hoping she leads him to trouble this evening!

Shot a cull buck yesterday at 4:45pm, north of Hwy421. Had 4 on one side and just one big horn and a brow tine on the other. He weighed 175lbs. He came out just cruising a field. His neck was half swollen and hocks were black. Will post pics soon. I also saw a really nice buck on the way out at 6:30. I think they are really starting to turn it on. They are searching!!! Good Luck

I had a spike chasing a doe Saturday morning and had 4 "new" bucks show up on camera. Unfortunately, I am having to work right now but I will be on them Thursday morning.

Sneak attack
I jumped a small buck with a doe walking in yesterday evening. I think they're coming around! After this rain will be a good time to be in the woods.

I hunted a big food plot this evening that we haven't hunted much...It's on the camp road and we usually see lots of does and yearlings off of it, until the rut. I put the ol' Scarface decoy out there today just for S&G's and had a spike come to it all bowed up with his hair standing up. He did a full circle around it and then decided it was time to back down. Ol' Scarface never backs down! He's too dumb! Anyway, later on I had a few does and a small fawn come check it out, too. That's about it for today. Not bad for a rainy afternoon.

No Luck
I hunted this morning and didn't see a deer. They obviously moved yesterday evening/night after the rain. several scrapes had been freshened up and found some new ones as well. Hopefully they'll start running the does before the weekend ends.

Young deer acting a fool over it...3 1/2 year old bucks, as of last night, were not sniffing around too hard.

My 3 point acted a fool in the yard last night with some does, my 8 point just sat back and laughed...

Hey Made to Go, keep on keeping us posted on those deer like you did last year. Between 5 of us hunting today we saw 29 deer. A spike, a puny 6pt., some kind of small rack that came out late, and the rest were mostly does with a few yearlings mixed in. NO SIGN OF RUTTING other than scrapes being worked occasionally. Is it just me or is it the rut getting later and later every year?

I saw some new scrapes today, but saw some old ones that haven't been worked...Didn't hunt this evening.

It's starting
Looks like the rut is starting up around the Bains and Sage Hill road area. Another member killed a very nice 10pt chasing a doe this morning.

Not just yet off 421
We hunted hard from Thurs thru yesterday, saw a few scrapes, nothing fresh and few hookings. We saw very little deer movement, a doe here, a doe and yearling there, a couple 2.5 yr old bucks, not really rutting though. Either we missed it this yr (we didnt really hunt till Dec) or it hasnt happened yet, but this spending 8 hours in a tree to see one deer all day has me pretty discouraged!

Getting close if not already
Saw a nice rack come out of a thicket following two does @ 0815 Sat. Not aggressively, but still followed. That's the first nice rack we've seen in daylight all year...

Hunt where the does are! I've been hunting a plot that had quite a few does and nice bucks coming to it LAST YEAR. Haven't seen hardly anything other than young bucks and yearlings in it THIS YEAR. We have a plot on our camp road that we have to drive through every evening and there is always a bunch of does and no bucks in the early season. Til now. Hunted it 3 times in the last few days and have seen different racks coming in to check for does. The bucks are on the prowl!

COLD
MAN IM PUMPED TO GET UP TO THE CAMP WITH THIS COLD WEATHER. IM WONDERING HOW AND WHEN THE DEER ARE GOING TO BE MOVING. HOPEFULLY THEY WILL MOVE WHEN THE SUN IS UP. I WILL BE IN THE STAND BEFORE THE SUN COMES UP NO MATTER WHAT. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON IT?
Reply
My thoughts
I am going to slip in around 8 and stay till after lunch, get a bite, then hit it again. My past experience is they dont move until the frost melts or starts to warm up a little when the temp is below 26 or so.

Frozen Update
Well, we went from seeing nothing but young bucks and no does to nothing but does. Hunted Saturday and saw over 20 deer, all does, no bucks. If we havent missed the rut, at least i know where the does are :), but would have thought i would have seen something chaisin the girls!

I hunted this morning (in a warm box stand of course) and had a spike and two yearlings feeding on grass when a larger deer (about 170ish lbs. and broken up horns) came in and checked all 3 deer looking for a hot doe. All I can say is hunt where the does are! I forgot to mention that I killed an 8pt. on Thursday and he was the stinkiest buck I have ever laid my hands on. He was cruising for does, headed toward a food plot.

No signs of rut anywhere on our 1800acres.Saw over 40 does this past weekend,no bucks,no chasing,no nothing. All of the scrapes from 3weeks ago are covered in leaves..Makes you wonder. All bucks that were killed in the past 3 weeks were feeding, none chasing does.

From what I'm seeing on our place near The Bluffs it appears to be over with. Not seeing much of anything at all. I've got some cameras out behind my house in Port Hudson and I thought this was pretty cool today. I checked the back camera and I finally got a picture of a buck I had pics of in velvet. He's got a broken main beam (half rack)and would have been a really nice 8pt. Now I get pics of several decent bucks back there each week, but I have not had a pic of this deer since mid-September. Where in the world has he been?
