.45-70 and/or .444

Thinking of getting my son a .45-70 or a .444. How much recoil do you experience with these weapons? I don't want to get him something that he won't enjoy shooting.
Thanks

RECOIL
Recoil is significant in both of these rounds, largely due to heavy bullets coming out of a light rifle.

But some people handle recoil better than others.

I went with .44 magnum for my 10 yr old & wife. Hardly any recoil at all.

A 30-30 is one of the greatest deer loads there is and hardly much recoil. With the new pointed bullets they can shoot out to at over 250 yards which is plenty of range for a kid. One of the most overlooked cartridges out there.

Recoil
I find that the 45-70 recoil is MUCH less. It fires at a lower pressure than the 444. The 444 in my opinion is to much for youth.

...it won the West
...if people w/ bows and arrows have the skill and perseverance to kill within 50 or 60 yrd...the "tuddy/tuddy" w/open sights and judgement w/ adult moderation can't be beat...just put a little white-out on de front beed...and leave the long range crippling and track'n along...cheers

Primitive?
I'm guessing he picked these two calibers because he plans on the rifle being used for primitive weapon season. If that's the case the 30-30 isn't gonna cut it.

i think your gonna get close to the same out of both of these. But i can tell you i just bought an h&R .444 yesterday and just shot it for the first time. Its a little less recoil than my 30-06 if that helps. I dont think its too bad.

45/70 H&R is a recoil beast!!! Too much for a kid I'd say. Shoot and enjoy don't really go well in a sentence about it.

I prefer the ballistics on the .444. The foot ponds of energy are almost the same in both rounds. More velocity in the .444 with a lighter round. Hard to judge the recoil! I have been trying to decide myself which one to buy.

I have a 444 and the recoil is probably a little more than a 30-06. You can certainly feel it. I am pretty sure most 444's will shoot 44 magnum shells as mine (New England Firearms) says 44 or 4444 shells on it. That would be the way to go. Shoot the 44 mag shells while he is young and then use the 444 shells when he is older.

Ive been shooting a 45/70 for over 40 yrs and I would NEVER LET a Child shoot it !! I shoot a 1886 Win and its heavier then the HR and it will give a strong man a flinch !! I use a set trigger just for that reason ! They are a killer on both ends I don,t know his age but don't RUIN him ! Just my 2 cents Capt Bob

I have a Knight KP1 in 444. Knight put a special rubbery buttplate on it that reduces felt recoil quite a bit. Not much more than a 243 or 30/30. You'll pay over $700 for a new one with a box of Hornadays, but its well worth it. I hear the H&Rs kick like mules.

No Recoil
I have a .444 H&R & while shooting at a target it kicks about like a 30.06, But while shooting @ deer it has no recoil what so ever. So I suggest that you sight in the gun & let your son shoot at the deer. He won't even notice the recoil.

.444 kicks less and has a flatter trajectory

44 Mag in 444....no way!
Shooting a 44Mag bullet in a 444Marlin is a definite mistake. The casehead specs are different, .457" vs .471". The diameter of the 444 just ahead of the rim is larger than the 44 Mag and the 44 Mag case will either swell to fill the space or rupture. There is no support around the case and the results are always bad; the hotter the load, the worse the results. If you're not concerned about high pressure gas at 36kpsi blasting past the ruptured case and thru the firing pin channel and breech at you, take your chances.
