Wifey did hubby huge favor and got new Fishing License(think she simply called 1-800 number and got PDF and printed it for my signature)and she also did hubby huge favor and lent a hand getting Southfork out from under her comfy confines(12 by 24 ft very nice boat shed, finally cleared clutter so she can rest under cover)! Not exactly sure what ole Mother Nature had in store for me but did get greeted with fairly decent conditions at mouth of Cane Bayou, tossed two-headed coin(heads on both sides???)and made de executive decision to hit Causeway, where I was greeted with water that was absolutely gorgeous, took exactly two casts at set of Pilings to boat cute lil 12 inch red,had a much bigger red trailing him and it did not take too long for much nicer red, about 19 inches,to gobble up Berkley Gulp Swimming Mullet,Chartreuse. Not too many casts later, boated a red that looked to be pegged right at 16 inches(had Home Cheapo wooden yardstick as my ruler)and I did not wanna risk it,let fine red go and nabbed fairly big croaker, always a welcome sign and then started getting Gulps shredded so I headed way East to bass mecca, only thing was bass did not know it!!!Headed back to Causeway and dinked around, watched storm start building near Cane so I made my way back to mouth of Cane, took rods outta holders and got very light sprinkling on way in,fun solo trip and reds are definitely out at Big Bridge, just not stacked up though I did catch 3 at one set of Pilings and also caught lady fish on return trip to Big Bridge, not a bad omen!!Think ya just gotta hunt and peck and stick a few nice reds in box and I did catch decent croaker and blue catfish,so I caught enough for dinner!!!Happy Independence Day and be safe!!

Hi Mandevillian,
I have a question for you....why do you launch out of Cane Bayou to go to Causeway and fish other spots in the lake? Don't you pretty much have to idle the entire way out to the lake? I only launched there once and decided unless I was fishing the mouth of the bayou then I would be better off launching somewhere else such as in Bayou Lacombe or the Mandeville boat launch.

Well,Here is why-I fish a nice cove not far from Goose Point and the best way to access it happens to be via Cane Bayou, plus if I get the notion,I can bass fish the entire length of Cane Bayou. There is a section 'no wake' but no where near the entire length of Cane.If I get to the mouth of Cane and the Causeway is a 'no-go',I have easy access to the pristine shoreline from Cane East to Goose Point, dat's why!!The Mandeville boat launch gets pretty crowded and the only reason I would launch there would be if I was 100% gonna fish the Causeway and still might launch at Cane for the nice peaceful and relaxing boat ride.Love watching woodies and other waterfowl and gators and Cane has plenty of all!!

Thanks for the explanation. I remember a bunch of logs and junk in cane bayou but maybe that was just towards the beginning. I have not been to goose point in years. I tend to go out of Chef Pass when I go but since I live in Mandeville would be nice to find a place a little closer to home. What type of boat you have? I have a 20 ft xpress but think the lake would probably be too rough for it with any amount of South wind.

I know there is a bridge for the Rails to Trails once you launch that you would have to go under. How much clearance would you need to fit under the bridge. I have never launched there before and have a 205 Sea Fox Bay Boat. Don't know if I could fit there.

My Southfork is a 16 by 52 Commercial flat and she fits quite easily under the Trace Bridge but do not think a 20 ft Express or 205 Sea Fox would fit between the Trace Pilings.I pick my days strategically and kinda prefer believe it or not somewhat of a slight W wind as I like heading back with the wind at my back and a W wind,as long as it is not too terribly due W or too strong is not a bad wind for fishing the N turnarounds.Today,I started out with very slight NW winds and the water out at the Big Bridge is absolutely gorgeous as is the water near the Goose Point area. For tossing spinnerbaits in the grass beds,I do not want a W wind as that mucks up the NShoreline a tad, making sight-fishing and finding willing participants much harder. There are still some beasts out there,do not let low salinity deter ya as I have caught plenty of reds in about zero salinity water.I have caught a variety of species recently with reds and croakers the majority and have caught a pinfish(SShore)and ladyfish(NShore)so we might start seeing a slight uptick in salinity and spotting stingrays, though none lately, not a bad sign. One of the reds I caught today was a pig with three tiny croakers and bunch of crab debris in its belly!!
