Personal best catfish on a rod and reel

This past spring I was fishing down at the Atchafalaya Delta WMA. I caught a few normal size catfish in an area where we sometimes also catch red fish and back drum. Suddenly I had a hard bite and when I set the hook, I knew that I had something really big on. I immediately thought bull red or bull black drum. I had 17 lb test mono, so I did not want to try to horse the fish in any way. When it would run, I would loosen the drag a little and it went on like that for a little while. As it tired, I was able to get it closer to the boat. I got a glimpse of the huge head and then it ran off again. Now I really wanted to get that big thing in, knowing it would be a personal best. I had brought my gaffe along just in a case I hooked up a bull red and now it was time to put it to use. I eased him up along side the boat in gaffe range and it was over. It was a huge catfish that filled up my ice chest. He weighed 18 lbs. To that point, the biggest catfish that I had ever caught on a rod and reel was 13 lbs and that also was at the Delta. My next biggest was maybe 5 lbs. So this one was special.

Dem blue catfish are currently all over Lake P due to the Spillway Opening and in 2016,the last time they opened the Spillway prior to this year,I had a personal best 18 lb blue catfish and a red that was 15 lbs,on same trip,in Lake P.Congrats! Those cats are delicious, just gotta take away the thick red meat along the lateral line, kinda the same thing with bigger reds, plenty of good eats!!
