Anyone Venturing Out Tomorrow or Th

Wifey and I did a Sam's Club run,the one in Slidell,so I could hit Sportman's Warehouse, looking for some fine mallard decoys to assist me in my quest to thin out fairly thick population of huge greenheads.Bought half-dozen fine Higdon large flocked head(greenies)decoys with some extra-nice Tangle Free Rig-em-Right decoys strings(really fine stuff)and searched one of my sheds for balance of huge black duck decoys(found pair never used)and rigged up the 8 decoys and tagging along three feeder butts and hoping I have enough water to access spots where I have seen nice flocks of mallards the entire Second Split.Due to expected ridiculously low water, doing solo hunt plus much later launch and thinking I may be doing quite a bit of breaking through ice with push pole plus may have to anchor flat in Lake, not a big issue and have done so on past hunts with similar icy conditions and low water conditions.Probably gonna have to do combo push-pole/paddle just to access trenasses leading to mallard meccas!!Hope I can at least get out and if nothing else see what ducks might be working pristine tree-line ponds, assuming they are not completely iced over-need my Cajun Ice-Eater-hope dey do not outlaw my Cajun Ice Eater!!!

I will be giving a tree line pond a shot this Thursday in hopes of finding some green heads (conditions looking a little more bearable than tomorrow(Wednesday). Good luck to you and please let me know how you do so I’ll know the trip is worth the frigid trek Thursday!

Beau,Was hoping to head out this am knowing exactly where those greenies have been hanging out but think I am gonna stay put til tomorrow. Wifey went to walk dogs and she is gonna check to see if Hwy 59 iced up but doubt I will make it out today. Hope to redeem self tomorrow and rest of season. Talked to guy at Sportsman’s Warehouse yesterday and joked with him about me being in Jan Marsh and Bayou and he was gonna hit non-motorized Pipeline today. Bet that Pipeline
a ditch and Cane Bayou was not much more than a ditch yesterday. 😬👎🏻

Beau,Got reply from some of the fine folks on Delta Waterfowl Committee and one reminded me about the icy deathtraps out there and de last thing I wanted to do was to risk wrecking my tow vehicle/boat and NO DUCK worth risking death/extreme harm,no doubt! For those doubters out there, plenty of quality birds all over NShore Marsh just hunkered down in select, pristine ponds that are an absolute nightmare to access and dat makes perfect sense.Ducks out there typically pattern hunters first few weeks of season and later and later starts and much later flights de norm vs the exception and guy from Sportsman's said his buddies(ya might be one)have killed plenty mallards and even one guy shot two pintails this season.I saw small flock of pintails,Nuck saw probably same flock and have seen few single drakes but none close enough for decent shot!!Hope we both get out tomorrow!!

Mandevillian,

I know I am going to catch a lot flack for this post but I can no longer sit back anymore. I too have hunted Big branch for at least 40 years with mixed results. What I have really enjoyed about the area is that I can paddle in and do a fair job of getting away from people. I can't remember you posting so many times this year or ever posting in the past. I also have never seen as many people in the area I hunt as I have seen in the past. While hunting last week I met up with 2 hunters and asked them if they killed anything. They were set up in an area I usually hunt and this hurt because this is the first time I've seen them or anybody else in this spot. They went on to say that they have been reading about a guy on the Sportsman blog that posts about Big branch all the time so they thought they would give it a try. I am all for helping people enjoy themselves in the great outdoors but I usually reserve this knowledge to my family and close friends. Remember, this is PUBLIC land. It is similar to a bass fisherman constantly reporting about fishing in Bayou Lacombe. Guides or hunters on a private lease don't have this problem. Sometimes less is more.

Mossback,Sorry but I hunt where it takes a Herculean effort to get to,no longer hunt anywhere that it only takes a short paddle to get to and I NEVER have anyone within at least 1000 yards of me on any hunt. That is precisely why I was posting, sorry if I messed ya up no intention on doing that and I can most definitely refrain from posting til de season ends.I used to hunt the non-motorized Pipeline with a few guys,we always hunted solo blinds and trust me,the Pipeline is NOT the place to try to hunt, unless ya wanna paddle to the end and hit what I jokingly call 'Indian Joe' over a 1.5 mile paddle and today woulda been impossible, trust me,I have tried to access 'Indian Joe' on days like today,it aint happening.I seriously doubt I ruined it for ya this year as last few years over 18 'hunters' got tickets at non-motorized Pipeline for accessing Refuge before 4 am and that was on Opening Day few years ago,no telling how many got tickets this Opening Day.Sorry if I unintentionally goofed ya up,no harm meant and good luck balance of season. What I say is dat if it is easy, every one gonna be right there with ya-where I go aint easy in the least and mallards central!!!

I live in Houma, with all the posting about Big Branch I'm thinking about making a run there too.

I hear that mossback. It's crazy how many people in Louisiana got into hunting and fishing after the duck commander guys and the alligator show on the tv. What's funnier is they think people who know better can't spot them like turd in a punch bowl as soon as they put on their new camo or start talking about their new hobby. I've seen and heard some really embarrassing stuff in the past few years like I've never experienced before. Nothing wrong with trying a new spot, or new hobby for that matter, but new spots are only new to the new guy. When you see someone telling random people about a good spot, 'here's your sign!'

Guess what guys, not a problem having more hunters to keep ducks from rafting and no I am not a 'newbie' have been hunting Big Branch Marsh for the better part of twenty years and have at it just be prepared to get stuck on mudflats, push pole til ya arms feel like dey falling off,get to wrong spots and see zero ducks, then ya give up before even firing a shot, trust me all dat gonna happen to folks dat make their first-ever foray to NShore Marsh.Just be respectful of other hunters,do not sky-bust,do not set up on top of other folks pack in PLENTY of cover,ya gonna need it and call appropriately and ya might surprise ya self.If it were dat easy, more folks would be close to me,no doubt about it.Public Land fellows, treat it right and ya never know how she gonna reciprocate.

There are decent paddle-in spots just be prepared for minimum of 1.5 mile one-way jaunt-better eat ya Wheaties,no kidding about it!!!

Don't mean to ruffle your feathers people. I'm just messing around. No need for me to venture out there. There's plenty of big ducks for me to kill here.

Toby65,Awesome results, just what I am talking bout,ya gotta go to know and even better,ya gotta know where to go!!Too bad I did not venture to where I see nothing but greenheads but gonna get after em right quick!!Great results and I never bother to ask where-keep dat spot close to de vest.I had a guy many, many years ago show me awesome spot in Sherburne WMA and my older son and I were blessed and I shot a banded jake(have never shot banded duck-bet banded turkeys way more rare)and this fellow was super-nice-met me at launch in Sherburne and I am forever grateful to him.If ya notice,I am not about to even give subtle hints about where I go,other than to sat tree-line ponds and those are everywhere!!!Where I hunt it is more than a chore to get to and it will stay dat way!!

Re: Anyone Venturing Out Tomorrow or Th
I’ve hunted the area the past three years, mostly off of lake road and in Slidell. It’s hard work, walking/paddling to ponds to get away from crowds. Some kids in the area lack hunting courtesy which has made me shy away from hunting as often as I used to. Area has become increasingly more packed every year. I had some great hunts and some in which we strike out, almost always pays off to make long paddles.
This year have shot only teal, wood duck, and a bunch of divers compared to last year where we shot a lot of greys.
Hopeing I can make it to the northshore tomorrow but with the freeze, not sure roads will be open. Good luck Tom and keep us updated on your success.
Thanks! -Beau

Beau,Ya must live on SShore.I joked with a guy who is NShore Chapter President of Delta Waterfowl about storing my Southfork flat at his boatshop but he has zero room and my former boat shed is junk pile room!!I live in Mandeville(hence name)and used to do some very successful paddle-in hunts and got tremendous shots at plenty of quality ducks, including canvasbacks and mallards but certain areas got over-run and not that many years ago,it was kinda comical to hear about 18 'hunters' getting ticketed for accessing Big Branch Marsh before 4 am,even though regulations clearly state no access before 4 am.These guys were honestly but illegally trying to get a 'jump' on others and they ran afoul of the Law and got ticketed, rightfully so.I no longer hunt non-motorized Pipeline, even though there are some incredibly productive spots out there, just gotta be willing and able to punch through thick ice(today especially)and make about a 1.5 mile one-way paddle, something that never bothered me,and I have shot many excellent ducks in area that another die-hard jokingly calls 'Indian Joe' as only ya closest friends get access to ole 'Indian Joe'!!We also used to hunt both sides of Lake Road with variable success, always seem to do quite well mid-week,obviously with much less hunting pressure and last few years, thanks to awesome pirogue rack, take my Southfork flat to access spots waaaaaay deep in dat Marsh with zero hunters near by.Good luck to all following threads and hoping for extremely strong finish to a weak season, maybe averaging a shade over one duck per hunt, pitiful results but when others drop out, better for fanatics like Nuck and Futz!!

Whats funny robglobbob is I moved from the Midwest because of the awesome , cool and inspiring tv shows about the duck guys and alligator huntin guys. And I am here to hunt ducks ( especially at big branch marsh) , fish all over the place and just have a whole lot of fun doing it, and it's even more fun knowing people NEW to Louisiana gets under your skin. Have a good day, I know I am.

Just like I tell 100% of folks dat think it is easy-do not count on seeing many ducks if dis is ya first time-think that place well over 10,000 acres stretching from Slidell to Lacombe and until ya bust ya butt better be ready for extremely hard work and when ya get frustrated by seeing zero ducks, watch where they do go and set up there, kinda duck hunting 101!Just had fellow not bash me but kinda gently suggest I refrain from posting about NShore Marsh and think I am gonna wait til Season End for re-cap.Certain areas have ALWAYS been over-run and I had absolutely zero to do with folks accessing de easy spots-so take it for what it is worth-Public Land Hunting, respect other hunters,be mindful dat if ya got hunters all around, not necessarily a terrible thing-do need hunters to scatter ducks,as long as everyone is RESPECTFUL!!!

Got de ole Southfork back and gotta believe she foaming at de mouth bout as bad as de Nuck and Futz, addition of Gerard,Duck Busting Team and probably gonna just do what we can to bust a few ducks, possibly refrain from posting til Season End and Re-Cap and just ecstatic that I do not have to fight a paddle-in hunt, though even when I do one dem paddle-in spots,if ya willing to bust it,not terribly difficult to get away from crowds and to where a buddy calls'mallard crack' in non-disclosed back-breaking ponds that are NO WHERE near another hunter!!Find de 'mallard crack' find de mallards,100% of de time!!!

You moved because of a tv show....?!!! Are you 13 years old?!!! That is absolutely wild that you would move halfway across the country for what we do in our spare time. You must have had absolutely nothing going for you there... Across the country for a tv show...of a hobby... wow why would you admit to that with people around? The Midwest must be a sh1thole.
