Aluminum Boat Chine Options??

Reply

I know there area a lot of guys building basic aluminum flat bottom skiffs and I was wondering if had any tips they would like to share as to how to join the bottom piece with the sides.
I plan to make one using 1/8' bottom and join it to a .100' side.
In the NW they have pre-made corner extrusions that accept 1/8' sheet aluminum but I can't find the right supplier.
Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

U don't use anything u simply fit the two together sides on top of bottom and tac as you go. If your welding skills are a little challenged let bottom stick out 1/8 to 3/16' over side. This will make welding much easier if your not as experienced. I like to weld my inside seam first. Just make sure to tac a handful of scrap braces to keep dimensions true as it will move as weld cools.

Thanks. That does make sense and this boat is for personal use and not for selling or generally looking pretty.
This boat will primarily be used in streams where rocks are present but obviously the idea is not to hit rocks all the time. The boat I currently have has a .125 bottom and .100 sides with longitudinal stringers and is fairly flexy and most likely built out of 5052.
I am planning to build the same type of boat in a 20'. I was thinking of using 5052 but would be interested to hear what most of the Louisiana aluminum flat bottoms are made of.

Thanks in advance.

Most aluminum boats are built out of 5052 but if not crimping u can move to 5086 which is about 20% stronger. In a 20 ft boat would usually be built with 3/16 bottom and 1/8 sides. There's no point in those extrusions as it's just more welding and expense and weight. Your boat flexes because stringers are lengthways with no horizontal tie ins or bulkheads. I've been taking my boat in Lake Ponchatrain in 2 to 4 ftrs over ten years and never seen it flex at all.
