ATV Problem

I have an 1999 Honda 450 electric shift. Every now and then it does not want to down shift and have to manually down shift. Has anyone had this problem and how did you fix it? I don't want to spend a ton of money if I can fix it myself.

Check your battery. Weak battery makes shifting irregular.

Shift motor
That year model was before the diagnostic codes were available. Several had problems with the shift motor which is located, I think, in the front of the block. Let us know what u find. Good Luck!

Don't hire me as your mechanic but..
Where you sitting still on an incline. If the bike is trying to roll putting pressure against the clutches that MIGHT cause that shifting problem.

Also I would take a look at maybe having dirt in the electrical connection to the transmition geary thingy haha Unhook it and clean it out and see if that solves the problem.

My hobby is riding and rebuilding ATV's , electric shift is not my gig as Honda Fourtrax is my favorite , but a few of my friends ride electric shift Hondas with us , and I have read a lot about problems and fixing the electric shift , everyone of my buddies who have electric shift have problems at one time or the other , but we ride in water alot , some will tell you electric shift is the best thing out there and other like myself will tell you it is junk and a money pit ( for what I do manual is better ) , the electric motor is a common problem , don't know about your model but they cost about $75 for the 420 ----a good source of information is Honda atv forum.com , you'll find lots of threads on troubleshooting and repairing your set up --------- you can do what one friend of mine that was feed up with the electric shift did and that was to fabricate a shift handle , much like the old school suicide shifter on a Harley or Indian , it works find for him , if you are trying to be a motor cross rider than this is not for you as you have to take you hand off the handle bars to shift but if you are just riding it works fine -------- one thing that you can do is take every electrical plug on the bike apart clean and apply dielectric grease to the plug , and take the shift motor off the bike and bench test it ----good luck

Mike, the bike is normally level when down shifting. I will have to try and clean the connections if I can find them. The bike is at the camp, will have to look at it after the hunt. Like I said before, It doesn't happen all the time. It just annoying when it does happen and have to manually down shift. Thanks for all advise and keep them coming. May have to look into the Honda forum.
