Red Snapper Amendment 40

I was very please to see all my fellow anglers come together last night. It was standing room only at the Hyatt conference room. The Gulf coast council knew when they left how we feel about our fisheries. However I feel that the council will do what they want to do regardless of public opinion.

I was there and brought 3 guys who usually fish with me. We were well represented with great comments. Kind of funny how most of the guys who showed up who are for the amendment were from Alabama. I think only Steve Tomeny and Joe Macaluso where the only 2 from the state who supported Amendment 40.

I would love to know where the supposed 'data' the gulf council is using to shorten the season and lower limits. Anyone with a rod and a circle hook can go catch a limit in 10 min at any platform off LA, as long as its in 50' of water. The commercial guys have got to be in the gulf councils pocket. theres no other logical explanation.......

The data is flawed and they know it. When they said they group us in with Florida who have decimated their own Red Snapper. Basically we been punished because another state allowed their fisheries to be over harvested.

The meeting in my eyes was a farce. They are and will do what they already have planned on doing, shutting recreational anglers out. The meeting was just formality so they can say that they put it up for public comment and regardless what happens they will say 'its in the best interest of the species'.

Glad to hear that there was a big turn out. I planned on going but my daughter had a blowout on her car.

Yes there is a conspiracy going on and it isn't just a theory. Money talks and there is a lot of effort being put up to whittle away at RS fishing.

Many of the people supporting all this stuff are paid to drive all over the south to attend all these meetings.

Are you aware that snapper like reefs, wrecks and any kind of hard structure? Are you aware that NMFS refuses to survey 99% of the snapper habitat when conducting surveys? Any structure that is not natural is excluded.

Why do you think an organization charged with doing surveys of Red Snapper populations refuse to look in the places snapper live. It is akin to doing deer population surveys only in the city!

This isn't by accident.

I was there, but I couldn't tell if Joe stumbled on his words. He really supports this amendment?

If so, what was his reason? So that recreational guys will get so fired up they'll urge congressional action?

Seems out of character for Joe and I wish i could recall what he said.

Those alabama guys are most likely commercial fishermen that run to louisiana waters to fill their quotas, then bring the fish back to their home waters, and sell them for increased profits. they cant catch them in alabama or florida waters any more, so they are moving in on ours now. WHY ELSE WOULD THEY BE CONCERNED ABOUT A NON-MIGRATORY FISH MULTIPLE STATES AWAY?! No question about it...

The meeting was just to try to fix poor public image. its strictly for show. it will have ZERO effect on the laws/regulations. The gulf council already knows how they are going to set the quotas....theyve already been paid. the alabama guys are making sure their \'investment\' isnt wasted. its a sad situation.

This sounds really bad, but if they are all playing dirty, they should get played dirty. They would leave it alone real quick.

Hard to believe Joe Mac would side with the gulf council, after seeing first-hand, the abundance of Red Snapper. I never wouldve expected that from him. I'm disappointed
