Best Baitcasting reel?

Looking to get a baitcasting reel. Haven't used one in a while and from the internet searches the field has expanded since I last used one. So looking for advice on the best baitcasting reel out there. Willing to spend up to $250

Reel
Abu Garcia Revo STX or Premier. I haven't put mine in saltwater so I don't know how they hold up against a Shimano but they are smoother than a Shimano. Shimano has a better track record when you consider saltwater though.

I have Revo's for bass fishing and I still have the old Curado's for saltwater.

Revo's are definetly smoother though

Lifetime warranty
Check out the Okuma reels too. The lifetime warranty they offer on all reels is nice, the in store trade in is hard to beat.

Help is only a click away
With this new media for information you can click on must web sites that sell reels (bass pro and Cabela)and they have a comment section for people that have purchased these reels. They give you their experience of the performance of the reel. Think this is better than some pro that gets them free. Think KDV uses Quam. reels.

curado
the shimano curado and citica are the best two reels for the money on the market today. they also are 'saltwater rated'. the curado has fairly big knobs on its handle, and they make working popping corks and topwaters a dream. it also helps when fighting a nice redfish. you will not find a better reel at its price point, $180.

here is a review from the tackle tour guys. they give the most unbiased equipment reviews on the web: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRbp9YH87bc

i friend of mine has a black revo and it is a very nice reel, but after a few trips in the mash it had green oxidization all over it.

This is the problem with Louisiana
They go to Ala. for a week and spend a ton. Let's see Louisiana has the best salt and now bass fishing in the world and they go to Ala. to spend their money. 64M question why????????

citica
Take the 250 and go buy two citicas. Best reel for the price on the market. Academy has them for 119

agreed
i agree w/ hookedonquack...a Citica is def one of the best deals for just a hair over $100. Shimano Cardiff (Lower version of the Calcutta for $120) is also a great reel. I have a Curado, then bought a Citica and ended up buying 3 more Citicas after

Curado vs Citica
I have both reels. I purchased the Curado for $159 and for the $40 difference it is worth it. The Citica is a great reel. You can't go wrong with getting it but personally the curado is the best reel i have used. I have a Calcutta that is great but the Curado takes the cake for me.

All got it right
If you spend that much on a reel you will get a very good one if you stick w/ the popular brands that have been around for a while. Even the Citica and Revo S are excelent and under $150. Everyone will have their own opinion just like boats, its typicaly the one they have. In my opinion, and i fished most of the new models. Out the box, very tuff to compare, over the long haul is where i think Shimano starts to pull away so Curado and Calcutta get my vote. Just my 2 cents...

A suggestion
The curado is a sweet reel. However, and this is very subjective, if I had 250 to spend. I would hunt down a Chronarch 50mg.

GOOD REELS
I HAVE CALCUTTAS, CURADAS, AND A HOST OF OTHERS BUT I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE KVD QUANTUMS. IT FEELS GREAT AND HAS ALWAYS PERFORMED AS WELL AS ANY OTHER REEL IN THE BOAT IN CASTING, RETREIVING AND HORSE THE FISH IN.THEY ARE MODERATLY PRICED AND I RECOMMEND GIVING ONE A TRY.

reel good
i've had these reels:
old curado 200
new curado 207
pflueger president
pinnacle solene
pinnacle ??? black 9 bearing reel forgot name
revo stx
spidercast 3BB wide(first spidercast)
abu 5500c3
lews
corsair
quantum iron, wide spool and narrow

I fish more than alot. They have all held up very well. the most surprising have been the inexpensive pinnacles from wally-world. they are probabley the best cost/performance ratio but they are only five years old. the president is about ten, along with old curado. they are beat up pretty bad but they still cast very well. the revo is excellent as well. i use them all in fresh and salt. the only reel i was not impressed with is the wide spool shimano corsair. i can't even cast it but i still use it offshore for dropping baits straight down. all in all, they have all been great as long as they are broken apart, cleaned, degreased, and i reccomend real magic. it doesn't collect dust or debris.

my ratings:

tied for best: both curados, president
second place: revo STX
third: pinnacles and spidercast

shimano!
The new curado's and citica's are awesome. Smooth and castable. After looking at the schematics, I ended up with the Citica. Same reel except for 6.4 vs. 7.0 gear ratio and one bearing on the curado at the base of the reel shaft vs. a teflon bushing on the citica. bought one citica and ordered a bearing for $5 and replaced the bushing. now same as a curado for $126 vs. $160 to $180. even with the bushing, you'll be hard pressed to wear it out... I know have four Citica's and have only replaced the bearing on one...

I have a 14 year old calcutta and a 10 year old calcutta that i treat pretty rough and they work as well today as the day i got them. i also have a few year old curado that is a little lighter and smoother the the calcutta's . they all have held up well.

Re: Best Baitcasting reel?
Color: 16LB 9+1BB-Left Handed
I bought this real a week ago and it’s amazing. This is by far not a cheap reel and it works smooth. This is my first bait-cast reel and I was worried about birds nesting. But I set up the drag and magnet dial and started to use it. I have very little bird nesting with it. I can pitch this setup way better than my spinning reel. After I used this I went back to my spinning reel to pitch into a can I had set out and missed it by a mile. I tried to stop the spinning reel with my thumb but of course, that did not work. I would recommend this reel to anyone looking to get into bait-casting.

Re: Best Baitcasting reel?
If you can find an old Curado they might be the best reel ever built but if you are buying new I would go with Abu Garcia. The Revo is a great reel if you want one really nice reel. Personally I would buy 2 Orra reels. No, they are not as nice as the Revo's but for the price the Revo is not twice as good. I have 2 Orra's that I have fished fresh and salt for 3 years now and they are still as smooth as the day I bought them. I love my Revo as well but I have never put it in salt.

Re: Best Baitcasting reel?
The manufacturer of bait casting reels matters much for selecting the reel of your choice. These reels are for those who want more control and accuracy as they cast. Those having lots of past experience perfecting their technique. These reels have a higher gear ratio giving a faster retrieve. A dependable braking system of this reel will result in easy casting. There are many brands available in the market around $250.
