Incidents occurred on Dec. 12 in Assumption Parish, LDWF says
Enforcement agents with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries wrote up two Morgan City men on Saturday in connection with a couple of night-hunting cases in Assumption Parish.
According to a press release, John Maynard, 18, and Dylan Giroir, 22, were cited for two counts each of hunting deer during illegal hours with artificial light, hunting from a public roadway and spotlighting from a public roadway.
Around 11 p.m. on Dec. 12, agents allegedly observed two men on Highway 1011 near the intersection of Highway 400 spotlighting deer and firing four shots from the roadway, the release states.
Agents made contact with Giroir and Maynard, cited them for hunting deer during illegal hours, hunting deer from a public roadway and spotlighting from a public roadway, and seized a .22 caliber rifle, 9 mm pistol and 12-gauge shotgun.
On the morning of Dec. 13, agents received a complaint in Assumption Parish on a dead deer found near a camp on Highway 400. The complainant said he heard shots the previous night about 7 p.m. from the nearby camp, which is located about 4 miles from the case the night before.
Agents went to the camp, and saw the same vehicle from the previous night’s case. They knocked on the door, and Maynard and Giroir were there, the release states.
According to the release, both men admitted to shooting that deer about 7 p.m. the night before with the same .22 caliber rifle used to shoot the deer at 11 p.m. Agents cited both men with another count of hunting during illegal hours, hunting from a public roadway and spotlighting from a public roadway.
Hunting deer during illegal hours brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to six months in jail. Hunting from a public roadway carries a $100 to $350 fine and up to 60 days in jail. Punishment for spotlighting from a public roadway is set by individual parishes. The men could also face civil restitution for the illegally taken deer totaling $1,624, the release states.
