Mature bucks not moving much, but rut around the corner

Target these long-billed birds on the state’s public lands, and you’re certain to have a great time.

Seems like the deer movement/reports are mixed. I find this to be a tough time of year to see mature bucks, but I know what is right around the corner: the rut.

The snow we had on Friday seemed to lock them down Saturday morning. I have always believed that when everything is white from snow it takes away the deer’s visual defense; they are used to being alerted by a flashing white tail, and this is gone when everything is white.

As far as Deer movement goes, the smaller pieces of property and any areas that get inundated with hunter activities seem to have the deer moving more at night and not a very good daytime feeding pattern. You will have to wait for the rut.

However the big tracts of land and those that are isolated from human presence with not much hunting pressure can still be productive. Hunters who are very conscious of the wind are still seeing lots of deer during hunting hours.

Also deer are done with their summer feeding patterns and should be just starting the pre-rut in the next two weeks in the Felicianas and Southwest Mississippi, along with many other areas of the state.

The deer at Lottie Hunting Club around Livonia,La. has a mid-January rut so they are a little later to breed, but are still in a good feeding mode.

Since I expect my rut to be Dec. 22-26, I am staying away from the hunting areas except to feed right now, so I can get everybody feeling comfortable for the upcoming rut.

I will be going to bowhunt Giles Island this Thursday (Dec 10) for eight days, and I am expecting the pre-rut to be in full swing. The big boys should be up and on the move like they are every year. I’ll keep ya’ll posted on how it goes.
