Venice downriver producing redfish limits

Target these long-billed birds on the state’s public lands, and you’re certain to have a great time.

Who knows what this weekend will bring across coastal Louisiana. With high winds, rain and even snow in the forecast, deciding where to fish could turn more into a crap-shoot rather than a guarantee of consistent action.

Maybe the best thing to do is go as far south as you can get. At least that’s what Captain Brent Roy with Venice Charters Unlimited (225-268-8420) is going to do.

“The fishing down here has been great when the wind lets us fish,” Roy said. “The last few days have been tough for trout, but most of the guides are coming in with their limits of redfish.”

Just the other day, Roy had a crew from Baton Rouge with him, and they finally got on a downriver redfish bite around 11:00 in the morning. Rather than play around with artificial lures in the tough, windy conditions, Roy and his crew blasted the reds with market shrimp under a rattling cork in about four feet of water.

Most any of the bays down river where you can get out of the north wind can hold some redfish right now. Look for areas like points next to the canes, broken marsh and shorelines with lots of cuts and pockets.

Before the wind kicked up here recently, Roy had a couple unbelievable days for trout last week. On one particular day, Roy and his crew from Alabama landed a limit of big specks and redfish. They even landed a big pompano.

“Those fish were near the bottom in some of the bays,” Roy concluded. “We caught nearly every trout on the V&G Terror Tails.”
